We are hiring a full-time, permanent Electrical Engineer/Engineering-In-Training (EIT), Design Services position working out of Edmonton, AB.
We are looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Engineer to join our Design Services team. As an Engineer, you will design, review and take professional responsibility for Distribution (15-25kV) and Transmission (25kV and above) engineering designs that are produced with established methodologies and specifications including codes and regulations. The Electrical Engineer will have a broad and strong utility design understanding and demonstrate experience with Alberta Electric Code and CSA standards. You use your expertise to identify system deficiencies, develop solutions to meet Edmonton’s increasing load growth and to adapt to grid transformation.

What you’d be responsible for
You are accountable to the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to these):
- Authenticating engineering designs, standards, and specifications prepared by the individual, including recommending broader modifications and new approaches to design.
- Completing cable/TX life cycle replacement distribution designs, ordering material, work order issuance and approval, as well as field inspections and contractor management during construction and maintenance activities.
- Ensuring designers have the technical skills required to perform their work functions, developing and delivering engineering training to junior staff.
- Recognizing and encouraging continuous improvement throughout the design team and recommending new approaches for continuous improvement.
- Acting as a subject matter expert on Alberta Utility Code, Canadian Electrical Code and CSA Standards.
- Independently liaising with customers, the Design team and project management groups for regular communication and feedback on work progress.
- Obtaining all required permitting and approvals necessary for construction including easement, Ministerial Consent, railway crossing, ULA, pipeline crossing/proximity agreements etc.
- Acting as a consultant to internal stakeholders and providing distribution and transmission design insights.
- Identifying the necessary budget requirements for the provision of engineering resources, process improvements, technology upgrades, design improvements related to improved safety/reliability, the acquisition and development of the talent pool.
What’s required to be successful
Qualifications, experience and behaviours you possess are:
- Completion of a Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering (or a related field) from a recognized post-secondary educational institute.
- With a Degree we require:
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
- Engineer in Training
- With a Diploma we require:
- Professional Licensee (P.L. Eng.) with the ability to review, approve and stamp electrical distribution system designs.
- Currently registered or eligible to be registered with APEGA.
- 4+ years of experience in the design of electric distribution systems.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, Alberta Utility Code and CSA Standards.
- Excellent knowledge design and drafting standards for electrical systems.
- Broad knowledge and understanding of electric power systems.
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to resolve complex technical issues.
- Demonstrated ability to apply distribution system concepts.
- Strong diagnostic skills required and able to manage complex technical problems and develop innovative solutions where there are no clear processes and parameters in place.
- Conversant in the use of Microstation CAD, GeoEngineering and City of Edmonton Cadastral system.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access) and Visual Basic Applications.
- Familiarity with SCADA, Outage Management Systems (OMS), Distribution Management System (DMS), Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Distribution Automation (DA).
- Proficient in the use of personal computers, automated tools, and online conferencing applications.

You find better, smarter ways to complete work and support the further development of distribution design/planning philosophies, guidelines, practices, processes and criteria. You demonstrate project management and leadership skills while working in a team environment.
