About the Role
The Senior Network Engineer is a highly experienced individual contributor responsible for designing, deploying, and supporting advanced enterprise network solutions for clients. This role operates at a senior technical level and is expected to lead complex implementations, serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients, and contribute directly to billable delivery and project success.
This role requires deep expertise across routing, switching, wireless, security, and hybrid cloud networking. The Senior Network Engineer regularly leads technical discovery sessions, authors detailed designs, and presents architectures to client stakeholders. While this role does not have formal people management responsibility, it plays a mentorship and technical leadership role within the Technology Services team.
This role may not be for you: You prefer a purely internal IT role with minimal client interaction. You are not comfortable being accountable for billable utilization and project delivery timelines. You are comfortable leading client facing technical discussions and presenting solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The essential duties & responsibilities of the Senior Network Engineer role are outlined below in correlation with Dean Dorton’s performance management impact areas.
Technical
Definition: your specialized knowledge & expertise associated with the work you perform for/with clients (note: clients may be internal to Dean Dorton).
- Design, configure, deploy, and troubleshoot enterprise network solutions across campus, data center, and hybrid cloud environments
- Serve as a subject matter expert in advanced routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, EIGRP, and OMP
- Design and implement Cisco enterprise networking solutions including Catalyst Center and Catalyst 9200, 9300, 9400, 9500, and 9600 series switches
- Design, deploy, and support Cisco SD WAN solutions using Catalyst 8200, 8300, and 8500 routers
- Design and support Cisco wireless solutions including Catalyst 9800 controllers and Catalyst 9000 series access points
- Perform wireless RF design, channel planning, and validation using tools such as Hamina or Ekahau
- Design, configure, and troubleshoot Cisco Meraki solutions including MR, MX, MS, and Meraki managed Catalyst switches
- Design, configure, and troubleshoot network security solutions including Secure Firewall, FMC, Security Cloud Control, Umbrella, Duo, and Cisco ISE
- Develop detailed technical designs, implementation plans, and documentation for infrastructure projects
- Support complex troubleshooting efforts including root cause analysis and remediation planning
Behavioral

- Lead technical discovery sessions with clients to assess current state environments and define future state architectures
- Act as a trusted technical advisor to clients throughout the lifecycle of engagements
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Present network designs, recommendations, and tradeoffs to client leadership
- Maintain utilization targets through effective management of billable client work
- Demonstrate ownership of project outcomes, timelines, and quality standards
- Collaborate effectively with project managers, architects, security engineers, and other team members
- Serve as a senior escalation point for complex network issues
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to Network Engineers and other technical team members
- Demonstrate flexibility and accountability in a fast-paced consulting environment
Non-Charge
Definition: The contributions you make to Dean Dorton outside of direct client work.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical standards, templates, and best practices
- Support internal knowledge sharing, training sessions, and documentation initiatives
- Stay current on emerging technologies, vendor roadmaps, and industry trends
- Assist with evaluating and introducing new tools, platforms, and services
- Contribute to continuous improvement of delivery processes and methodologies
- Serve as a technical leader who models professionalism, collaboration, and accountability
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of enterprise network engineering experience
- Proven experience delivering complex client facing infrastructure projects
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- CCNA required, CCNP preferred or working towards attainment within a year
