Job Opportunity: Director, Health and Safety at Torex Gold Resources Inc.

Role Overview

As Director of Health and Safety at Torex Gold, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and advancing our well-established Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) to support our goal of zero lives lost or harmed in our operations. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role offers the opportunity to lead within a company recognized for its mature safety culture and exceptional track record in health and safety performance. With industry-leading systems already in place, we are seeking a strategic and proactive leader who can drive continuous improvement and innovation in safety practices and to continue to maintain our strong safety culture as we grow.

The Company

Torex Gold Resources Inc. is an intermediate gold producer engaged in the exploration, development, and operation of our wholly owned Morelos Property, an area of 29,000 hectares in the highly prospective Guerrero Gold Belt located 180 kilometers southwest of Mexico City. The Company is based in Canada, with our Corporate Office located in Toronto, Ontario. As of 2023, Torex became the largest gold producer in Mexico.

The Company’s mining asset is the Morelos Complex, which includes the El Limón Guajes (“ELG”) Mining Complex, the Media Luna Project, a processing plant, and related infrastructure. Commercial production from the ELG Mining Complex began in April 2016, and the Company’s Media Luna Project, located seven kilometers south of the ELG Complex, is currently under construction with commercial production expected to begin in 2025.

Torex’s key strategic objectives are to integrate and optimize the Morelos Property; deliver Media Luna to full production; grow reserves and resources; disciplined growth and capital allocation; retain and attract best industry talent; and build on ESG excellence.

  Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
    • Professional certification in health and safety (e.g., CRSP, CSP) is highly desirable.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in health and safety management, preferably within the mining sector.
    • Proven experience in developing and implementing health and safety systems, policies and standards in a complex operational environment.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and standards applicable to the mining industry.
    • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and influence at all levels.
    • Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on risk management and continuous improvement.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
    • Ability to travel
    • Spanish speaking would be an asset, but not a requirement.

Key Accountabilities

Health and Safety, Crisis Management & Technical Training Strategy and Workplans

  • As a leader of this key portfolio of work for the organization, work in partnership with the Executive Team and Operations Management team to develop, refine and implement a 3–5-year Health and Safety, Crisis Management and Technical Training strategic plan
  • In partnership with site leadership, develop the 1-year work plan for Health and Safety, Crisis Management and Technical Training,
  • Ensures site and corporate work plans support broader organizational goals

 

Development, Implementation and Improvement of Systems

  • Lead the work to develop/enhance and implement Health and Safety systems, Crisis Management system and Technical Training systems
  • Lead the work to continuously improve the process flows, management tools and internal controls to sustain the quality and cohesiveness of these systems
  • Continuously improve these systems to fit with the Technical and Commercial aspects of the business strategy.
  • Monitor and review systems to determine if they are delivering effectively against their purpose and deliverables.

 

Expert on Industry Knowledge and Compliance

  • Accountable for maintaining compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations and standards
  • Stay ahead of regulatory changes, identifying potential risks, and ensuring the organization consistently meets or exceeds legal requirements.
  • Establish and develop relationships with external regulatory bodies and safety organizations.
  • Provide ongoing dissemination of key learnings and trends to leadership and departments

 

Development of Organizational H&S Standards

  • Develop and implement H&S Standards for departments, roles, processes and equipment across the organization
  • Ensure that H&S Standards are maintained and regularly assessed, updated and communicated
  • Lead development and maintenance of controls for H&S Standards and Rules compliance

 

Reporting

  • Lead the development and improvement of quarterly Health and Safety, Crisis Management and Technical Training reports to Management/Board that outline associated activities and impact on operations
  • Lead the investigation of and reporting on safety incidents, including accidents, near-misses, and hazards, to determine root causes and identify corrective actions.
  • Lead the ongoing collection, monitoring, analysis and reporting of leading and lagging H&S KPIs to provide insight on H&S performance and opportunities

 

Championing a Health and Safety Culture

  • Promote H&S culture through identification, prioritization, execution and communication of key H&S programs, initiatives and practices
  • Introduce and oversee new initiatives, technologies, or tools that can improve workplace safety and reduce operational risks.

Drive a continuous improvement mindset, ensuring lessons learned from incidents are shared and applied across the organization.
