Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Opens and closes facilities according to established procedures.
  • Screen all people entering the buildings for elevator temperature and/or symptoms of illness according to medical protocols.  
  • Checks identification of persons entering the facility and verifies permission to enter with the host or according to established procedures.  
  • Refuses to admit persons who cannot show either proper authorization or cause for being admitted. 
  • Cleans and keeps duty areas, lobby, and areas immediately outside of entrances in order.
  • Provide emergency medical aid including CPR if needed. Ensure that the response team and EMS are activated.  
  • Patrol areas inside and immediately outside of the buildings and address safety and security issues.  
  • Facilitate the package and mail handling process.
  • Assist with special events coverage as needed or requested.  
  • Assist other departments as needed or assigned. 
  • Reports via logs, emails, and other means regarding conditions, issues, observations, injuries, accidents, and events that occur during the shift.  
  • Reports to the manager and executes emergency action plan if elevators are not working soliciting freight use from the building.
  • Monitors video surveillance and reports suspicious activity to administration and the Director of Safety and Security. 
  • Responsible for monitoring that pools have appropriate staff including a lifeguard available in order to allow swimming.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, access routes, and admitting requirements.
  • May operate and monitor security and fire panels/alarms, and related security equipment to provide area and visitor surveillance.  
  • Responsible for having an understanding of procedures for any type of emergency.
  • Responds to and investigates situations reported. Calls police or other authorities to investigate suspicious activities or security violations that require intervention.
  • Responsible for notifying the LMPS Director of Safety and Security, 25 Broadway Security, and others of any calls made for police, fire, and EMS services.
  • Checks vehicles in private parking areas for authorized parking are there with consent by the Director of Facilities or the Director of Safety and Security.  
  • Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds, and surrounding areas to deter, detect, report, and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies. 
  • Detects, investigates, and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles, and activities. 
  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations. 
  • Conducts searches of persons and property when directed to do so by the administration and/or the Director of Safety and Security.  
  • Investigates violations of LMPS policies and procedures and prepares reports of the result, as directed by the Director of Safety and Security. 
  • Works with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and law violations. 
  • Assists with fire drills, lockdown drills, and other emergency exercises.
  • Attends and completes all staff development training as required by law or as directed. 
  • Abides by LMPS and Department guidelines, directives, and post orders. 
  • Reads and responds to email communications. 
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices and the LMPS Inclusion Statement in all activities. 
  • Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, and routine information.
  • Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations. 
  • Contacts emergency responders, such as administration, police, fire, and/or EMS personnel, as required.
  • Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security code violators; approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies other authorities as appropriate; may confront and/or detain violators, as required, until police arrive.
  • Performs periodic checks of emergency call boxes, lights, windows, doors, PA systems, and other equipment to ensure proper functioning and report malfunctions as required.
  • Safeguards and controls issued LMPS equipment including keys. 
  • Serves as Mandatory Reporter for Child Abuse and Neglect as outlined by New York State and New York City laws as well as established by LMPS,  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must possess a high school diploma (or equivalency) with some experience or training in a security-related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills, and abilities. 
  • Possession of a valid New York State Security Guard License is required. Initial certification plus New York State 16 hour OJT certification is preferred.  
  • New York City Fire Department certifications preferred (such as S95, W07, etc.) 
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification is required. 
  • Must possess knowledge of, and the ability to apply, standard security procedures and best practices. 
  • Must possess the ability to acquire knowledge of School and Company policies and procedures.
  • Security or Law Enforcement experience in a school setting preferred.
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, speak, and understand standard English. 
  • Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft and Google programs on PC and Mac devices.   
  • Completion of college-level courses in the area of security, psychology, emergency management, or criminal justice preferred. 
  • Must possess excellent human relations skills.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Must wear PPE for routine and emergency incidents. May need to use PPE for extended periods.
