The Opportunity
We’re looking for an empathetic Communications Associate to join our External Affairs team. The ideal candidate has a passion for storytelling and social impact with strong copywriting and content creation skills. You’re curious, flexible, and understand the importance of engaging an audience with the right strategy, message, and targeted delivery.

The Communications Associate will have a critical role in managing external and internal communication efforts for KIPP Public Schools Northern California. The Communications Associate will report to the Director of Marketing & Communications and support the external affairs team in sharing KIPP’s narrative and setting the conversation with key stakeholders. Primary responsibilities will include managing external communication efforts, such as; compiling and publishing regular, impactful newsletters; regular publishing of stories through KIPP’s blog and social media to capture and share the successes of the organization, pitching and prepping exposure to KIPP stories through earned media (digital & TV) opportunities.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Write high-quality and compelling longer-form pieces, as well as shorter social media posts, that communicate stories from the KIPP community to inspire stakeholders (donors, staff, families, and the general public)
  • Support building and lead executing against monthly content plans and comprehensive annual communications calendar that supports the communications efforts of KIPP
  • Staff and Supporter Newsletters: Publish ongoing stories (internal and external) that capture and share the celebratory aspects of KIPP
  • Content Sourcing: Gather in-person content for digital media, including quotes from families, teachers, and student; photos and videos from schools; casual first-person videos
  • Crisis Communications: Support in preparing crisis communications for the organization
  • Earned Media: curate, develop, and send pitches highlighting successes of the organization, as well as research and monitor media for relevant news and mentions
  • Student Recruitment: writing email, ad, and collateral copy
  • Website: Routine copy updates and accuracy checking, including regular language updates for SEO purposes
  • Administrative: process invoices, pull data reports from digital media platforms, manage student media release system, and organize media library, maintain an up-to-date story bank for the team to pull from throughout the year for both individuals and institutions

  • Strong project management and demonstrated ability to manage

multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Effective teamwork orientation with the ability to communicate and interact effectively

with multiple constituencies, including senior leaders, contractors/vendors

  • Hardworking, motivated and self-directed; able to think critically and anticipate needs of

customers to simplify processes and improve efficiencies across the teams

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and ability to adapt to a fast-paced, constantly changing
  • environment
  • A demonstrated passion for improving K-12 public education

Full-time, non-exempt position

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands
This position is based in KIPP’s Downtown Oakland office and requires some travel to school sites around Northern California. It may require remote work as current public health guidelines warrant.  

Physical: Traditionally, much of the day involves sitting or standing in one place. Ability to access and utilize technology.

Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental: Office environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Occasional classroom/school environment and travel. In emergency context, (e.g., pandemic) work may be conducted virtually fully or partially for extended periods of time or longer, and the expectation is that the individual will establish a productive, remote work environment (e.g., ability to stay connected through different technology means).
