Position Overview 

  • Under the direction of an assigned school administrator, the Bilingual Instructional Aide performs a variety of instructional support duties involved in providing instructional assistance to individuals and small groups of students with limited or non-English speaking skills; assist teachers in communicating with parents in a second language as necessary; perform a variety of clerical duties in support of the Multilingual Learner Programs.  

Knowledge/skills required: 

 

  • Demonstrate an empathetic, patient, and receptive attitude with students experiencing bilingual/bicultural instructional needs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English and Vietnamese; Able to serve as an appropriate language model
  • Ability to communicate in oral and written form in English and a second language as required by the assignment.
  • Ability to Interpret, understand, and follow specific student educational plans and courses of study.
  • Willingness to learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of an educational environment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, families and other stakeholders.
  • Proficient knowledge of Google Suite applications (Google Classroom, Hangout, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)
  • Ability to perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of education and office related equipment
  • Must meet requirements specified under the Federal Accountability mandates.

 

Essential functions and responsibilities 

 

  • Assists instructional personnel in the implementation of individual educational plans for students experiencing bilingual/bicultural instructional needs.
  • Tutors individuals and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up learning activities.
  • Assists students in the development of appropriate social behaviors.
  • Performs a variety of behavior management and behavior shaping functions.
  • Develops and assists in the development of specialized instructional materials.
  • Reinforces instruction to individuals or small groups in a variety of subjects.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of student records and files.
  • Administers and scores tests to determine student language proficiency levels.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of a learning environment appropriate to the special instructional requirements of students.
  • Uses a second language and provides cultural experiences to assist students with bilingual/bicultural needs.
  • May serve as a translator to facilitate communication with monolingual, non-English speaking members of the school community.
  • Performs language census surveys, testing, and records the results.
  • Develops and updates schedule and instructional plans for support staff and substitute use.
  • Supervises students and supports activities to ensure safe physical activities and games, as directed by the supervisor.

 

Other Duties 

 

  • May assist parents and families in the interpretation of education programs and activities to encourage participation in the educational process. Such as conferences, School Site Council (SSC) and English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)
  • May translate school-wide and district-wide materials, such as, letters to parents, documents, brochures, invitations, schedules for events, etc. for parents who may be non-English readers/ speakers.




 

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands 

 

Physical:  

Ability to navigate school campus and hold meetings in different spaces. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-20 lbs. Physical agility to move self in various positions in order to execute duties effectively, which may include frequently kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping and reaching overhead 

 

Mental:   

Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people. 

 

Environmental:  

School and classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies’ recommendations.

We benchmark annually against school districts and charter schools in the regions where we operate, to offer competitive salaries. The salary range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00 / hour.
