Frequently Asked Questions
What does the interview process look like for a Project Management position?
Our interview process includes three stages:
- A phone interview with one of our recruiters
- A first round of interviews with the Managing Director and a Director from the office you are interested in.
- A final round of interviews that includes a conversation with our CEO and an additional senior leader. You will also attend a panel interview where you would present a topic prepared in advance. In addition, we offer a courtesy lunch with someone who is in the role today to offer a peer perspective on IPM and the position.
- One of our dedicated recruiters will be in touch with you throughout the entire process and can move the process along as quickly as possible.
What types of projects will I work on?
We work with clients from a variety of industries, such as Pharmaceutical, Med Device, Biotechnology, Consumer Products, and Healthcare. Types of projects include product development, process improvement, strategic consulting, and more. We ask Project Managers about their experience and aspirations, and use that information in an attempt to provide them with suitable, challenging, and preferred projects.
How does IPM onboard new hires?
Onboarding and training make up the first three weeks of employment. You will learn about the project management methodologies and tools we use, along with guidance on the leadership and consulting aspects of the role. Our training team works one on one with each new hire to answer questions and point you in the right direction. You’ll meet with each function to get acquainted with company leaders and ensure you know about the support teams and other helpful resources. In addition, during your first year, you are assigned a mentor to help you get acclimated within IPM.
What kind of support does IPM provide during projects?
You will have weekly meetings to discuss your project with your Director. We promote 100% from within, so your Director has done the job before and can help you through any areas of concern. In addition, we have a highly collaborative approach at IPM. Our Centers of Excellence provide subject matter expertise on our industries and services, and Communities of Practice can share extensive hard-won knowledge on specific client situations. We also share knowledge and test ideas at regular national and regional meetings, via online forums, and by informal networking with peers.
Will I be able to grow my career at IPM?
Absolutely! We offer a career planning process that will help you learn what specific actions to take and skills to master to be considered for the next step in your career. We promote almost exclusively from within. Learn more about career progression opportunities here.
What happens when my project ends? Will get laid off?
Our positions are full-time salaried opportunities, so you are paid whether you are on a project or not. Between projects, IPMers participate in internal initiatives, help lead IPM-sponsored volunteer efforts, assist other project managers on their projects, or work on professional development opportunities.
How does a consulting role at IPM differ from other consulting firms?
- You are a salaried employee, whether you are on or off a project.
- Time in between projects can be used to pursue additional training, education, and/or certification classes to continue to develop your skills and knowledge.
- You get the opportunity to share your preferences on various aspects of project assignments.
- Over 95% of client work is local to the metropolitan areas where IPM’s offices are located.
- You can enjoy life outside of work! Our consultants work an average of 43 hours a week.
