We are hiring a fulltime, permanent Operator for our Red Deer location. This is an exciting opportunity to join an innovative, growing organization recognized as an industry leader in water and wastewater treatment.

 

As an Operator, you will be operating, maintaining, inspecting and repairing all aspects of water and wastewater systems for the Red Deer County facilities and related infrastructure. This includes sample collection, laboratory analysis, and ensuring operational and regulatory compliance.

What you’d be responsible for

 

Important Note: A major component of this position involves driving between multiple locations, completing inperson commercial and residential meter reads, and working independently for extended periods. Candidates should be comfortable with a substantial amount of ontheroad time, walking, and independent fieldwork.

 

Reporting to the Site Manager, your key accountabilities are, but not limited to:

  • Operating, maintaining, inspecting, and repairing wastewater treatment, water treatment, water distribution and wastewater collection facilities and infrastructure.
  • Collecting water and wastewater samples and performing laboratory analysis in accordance with internal QA/QC standards.
  • Supporting infrastructure servicing for wastewater collection systems, water distribution systems, and plant operations activities, including:
    • Water quality sampling
    • Process monitoring, evaluation, and control
    • Residuals management
    • Equipment isolations and shutdowns
    • Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Controls (QC) testing
    • Performing routine and scheduled maintenance on water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including fire hydrant servicing, main valve inspection and exercising, and sewer manhole inspections
  • Completing daily work permits and safe work plans.
  • Gathering operational data for required monthly regulatory and internal reporting.
  • Installing, reading, and troubleshooting water meters.
  • Generating and analyzing operational, safety, and financial reports (monthly, annual, or as required).
  • Troubleshooting operational issues and developing practical solutions.
  • Developing, reviewing, and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

 

What’s required to be successful

 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Grade 12 diploma (G.E.D. or equivalent).
  • 2+ years of directly related experience in the water and/or wastewater field, preferably at a Level 1 certified (or higher) facility, with demonstrated relevant handson operational experience.
  • Level I Certification (or higher) in either Wastewater Treatment, Water Treatment, Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection. 
    • Individuals possessing less than the level 1 certification may be considered at a developmental level and aspire to upgrade certification in all of the disciplines (Wastewater Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection) within 24 months of hire.
  • Must have a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator's License
    • A clean driving record. with 6 or fewer demerits.
    • Ability to qualify for and maintain a valid EPCOR driver's permit.
    • A 5-year Commercial Drivers Abstract is required at the time of hire.
    • We are not accepting drivers with a GDL license.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Proven commitment to safety, with the ability to take an active role in completing assigned tasks and to work effectively as part of a team.

Jurisdiction: Out of Scope Hourly (OSH)

 

Wage: is on a matrix scale recognizing certification levels. Final wage and step placement will be determined at the time of offer based on a combination of factors as outlined on the wage grid.

  • $34.46 - $43.33 (Certified Operator)
  • $33.31 (Non-Certified Operator)

 

Hours of work: 8 hours a day; 40 hours weekly (8:00AM – 16:30PM with one half hour lunch break).

  • Overtime, weekend, and shift work may be required.
  • Must participate in the on-call rotation system (45-minute response time is required)
