As an Uncertified Laboratory Assistant – MLA Student Training Program
you will be responsible for the pre and post analytical processing of laboratory specimens and/or entering requisitions accurately and in a timely manner while ensuring quality control checks and standards are run as required. Your contributions will make a difference and will greatly impact the downstream solutions and treatment critical to saving someone’s life.            
           
Shifts – 7am to 8pm

How YOU will make a difference:           
           
  • Data enter all patient and test information for MOH and Private client requisitions in an accurate and timely manner
  • Verify the completeness of all documentation and file related paperwork
  • Handle STAT, verbal, critical and special instructions as required
  • Process add-on test requests and subsequent specimen selection
  • Process all specimens including receiving, sorting, labeling, separation, and placing in appropriate area
  • Follow all guidelines for the handling of infectious material
  • Sort and/or label all specimens received matching to the documentation provided
  • Prioritize time sensitive specimens
  • Separate specimens according to sample type, barcodes and type of test. Ensure all specimens are placed in appropriate area for testing and/or shipment to an outside laboratory
  • Responsible for problem solving
  • Liaise with various departments for any problems and inquiries
  • Perform routine pre-analytical equipment maintenance following documented procedures, as required
  • Prepare specimensand documentation and shipping for reference testing
  • Ensure type of sample is correct for specified test and sent to correct reference laboratory
  • Responsible for follow-up on missing samples, documentation, results, etc.
  • Prepare and record departmental daily/weekly and monthly environmental conditions
  • Prepare samples for analytical testing (aliquot, plate, centrifugation)
  • Archive and or dispose of samples in accordance with written policies and procedures
  • Liaise with LHSC for any problems or inquiries
  • Participate in a culture of safety
                          
What YOU bring to the role:            
  • Excellent data entry skills required (minimum 40 words per minute)
  • Ability to handle incoming and outgoing phone calls and respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team centered environment
  • Nice to have: Knowledge of Omnitech Data Entry system/LIS

Working Conditions            
  • Normal office environment
  • Medical laboratory environment
  • Required walking with repetitive motions
  • May sit or stand for prolonged period of time with extensive computer use
  • Required to lift a maximum of 30 pounds as required 
  • Exposed to biohazardous substances, temperature differences and noise variances 
  •  At times might require frequent standing, sitting, bending, etc.  
    
           
Starting at $21.00 per hour 
The hiring pay range has been established; however, the final pay offer will be determined by taking into consideration various factors including but not limited to, level of experience and education requirements.
