Are YOU our next Senior Clinical Laboratory Assistant?  
The Forensic Toxicology Department has an opening for a Senior Clinical Laboratory Assistant in London, Ontario. The Senior Clinical Laboratory Assistant will oversee the quality of testing processes and workflow. This will include a preliminary review of results data (specifically data from a mass spectrometer) to identify and escalate concerns, identify repeat testing requirements and prepare information for the MLT to review and approve results. They will providing technical training and technical oversight of lab assistants and troubleshooting. They will participate in all quality assurance programs and ensure company and Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines are observed. The Senior Clinical Laboratory Assistant is required to use fine hand manipulation, visually examine specimens and systems, and monitor instruments and other equipment. This role requires critical analysis skills and the ability to focus on and manage multiple tasks.
 
Status: Permanent, Full Time
Shift: Day Shift, Monday - Friday, various hours between 7:00 am – 4:00 pm. Guaranteed 37.5 hours per week

How YOU will make a difference: 
  • Apply extensive technical expertise to review quality of testing, recognize and escalate concerns to an MLT
  • Assist with the development of new methods or modifications to procedures
  • Participate in SOP development and updates as necessary
  • Responsible for data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc.)
  • As part of high complexity testing:
  • Prepare samples, reagents, solutions, standards, and reference material for analysis
  • Perform analysis and analyze testing data to coordinate and oversee additional quality checks and tests
  • Record test results according to established procedures, including transcription checking, prior to result review and release by MLT
  • Summarize testing completed and present test quality summary data for review and approval by MLT
  • Oversee and coordinate work in process, ensuring efficient testing that maximizes throughput and TAT compliance
  • Provide technical training and technical oversight of lab assistants as required
  • Troubleshoot and escalate concerns to an MLT
  • Perform instrument/equipment calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or repairs as required
  • Corrects nonconformance and potential nonconformances, including participating in proficiency test programs in consultation with an MLT
  • Must be able to recognize unsatisfactory analytical performance and suggest appropriate corrective actions
  • Provide input to team and leadership for improving performance
  • Where required, may perform CLA or Sr. CLA duties to maximize testing throughput
  • Field questions from other teams regarding problem samples and questions
  • Responsible for the follow-up on missing samples, overdue results, documentation, and results as and when required
  • Resolve technical and specimen problems, escalating result approvals to MLT where required
  • Ensure all inquiries and problems are handled in a courteous and professional manner
  • Ensure that quality control checks are performed as required in documented work instructions
  • Responsible to follow all relevant pre and/or post analytical quality protocols as described in the company quality assurance manual
  • Perform advanced equipment maintenance as required
  • Verify and oversee quality, maintenance and housekeeping tasks performed by the team
  • Document all maintenance performed, including minor troubleshooting following manufacturer’s instructions
  • Observe and report all malfunctions in equipment and maintain all required logbooks for routine equipment
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive topics as appropriate
What YOU bring to the role:  
 
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 2 years of related experience required
  • MLT certification is an asset/preferred
  • Mass spectrometry experience an asset
  • Knowledge of full range of scientific disciplines used in the lab
  • Advanced post-secondary education in related science required
  • High information processing capability
 
SKILLS AND ABILITIES 
  • Advanced skills applicable to senior tasks that may be assigned
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding and experience with advanced instrumentation and technology, specifically mass spectrometry
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team centered environment
  • Excellent organizational and self-management skills to work independently
  • Aptitude to share knowledge to develop internal employees

WORKING CONDITIONS
 
  • Required continuous standing/walking with use of fine motor skills with high visual requirements
  • Required to perform some carrying and lifting a maximum of 30 pounds
  • Following universal precautions, required to working with clinical human specimens, chemicals, and noise variances
  • Shift work required
