About the Role

The SALT Project Manager manages end-to-end sales tax automation projects, ensuring seamless implementation and optimized compliance for clients. They play a key role in expanding the firm’s automation service offerings, contributing to process improvements, and delivering innovative solutions that enhance client outcomes. Additionally, they collaborate closely with clients, mentor team members, and support strategic initiatives that drive the growth and success of the firm.

 

This role may not be for you:

This role may not be a fit for someone who prefers heavy guidance, isn’t comfortable working independently from day one, or doesn’t want to dive deep into sales tax automation. It’s also not ideal for those who would rather avoid client-facing implementation work, training or managing others, or handling complex sales tax projects like nexus studies, audits, and compliance. Someone who prefers a very stable environment or is not interested in expanding automation offerings may also find this role challenging.

Someone who likes leading client projects from start to finish, mentoring or managing others, and digging into complex sales tax work - would likely find this role energizing. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Manage and execute sales tax automation projects from start to finish, including all client communication.
  • Implement and optimize Avalara tax calculation and return filing products, including AvaTax and MRA.
  • Conduct multistate sales tax nexus studies and advise clients on compliance requirements.
  • Handle sales tax registrations, voluntary disclosures, and audits.
  • Make sales taxability determinations and provide strategic guidance to clients.
  • Train and manage others to ensure consistent service delivery.
  • Identify opportunities to expand automation services and enhance workflow efficiency.
  • Adapt to a dynamic team environment experiencing substantial growth.

 

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in accounting, finance, business, or related field.   
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a tax or tax-related technical role with experience in tax compliance, client management, and team member development.
  • CPA or similar licensure required.
  • Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing sales tax automation projects.
  • Experience with multistate sales tax compliance, audits, registrations, and disclosures.
  • Strong client communication and relationship management skills.
  • Comfortable navigating change in a fast-growing team environment.
  • Ability and willingness to contribute to process improvement and service expansion.
  • In-depth knowledge of Avalara’s tax automation products; Avalara Certified Implementation Provider credentials preferred.
  • Experience with other sales and use tax automation platforms desired.
