Position Summary:

In this role as a Lab Supervisor and Lab Test Technician, the candidate will be supervising people in the test engineering lab(s).  Specifically supervising technicians and aid test engineers to perform certification testing for a variety of Conair Products.  The candidate will also be doing the testing themselves at times, but also shall engage, and train people to test new products that meet Conair’s strict standards for safety and excellence. Skillset should include knowledge of terms of electrical devices and components, electronic circuitry, product functionality, reliability, and safety.  The ability to schedule and run multiple projects at the same time is necessary.  Fluency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.  An Electrical Engineering associate degree as well as a strong background in Electrical Engineering is a plus and desirable.

The candidate should be a self-starter, and detailed orientated.  Maintaining the test labs and the test equipment is a requirement.  The candidate shall or can learn to be able to design, write and implement test cases approved by UL and ETL. To gain experience of our products and growth, good interactions with Conair LLC associates in marketing and engineering will be part of the job.

Responsibilities:

  • Become an accredited supervisor and test technician and maintain accreditation to certain UL and CSA standards, as required per our Intertek Satellite Lab Program.  Must acquire working knowledge of ISO 17025. This will be achieved by demonstrating the test method of each UL and CSA standard and explaining their requirements at the annual Intertek Lab Audit.
  • Maintain a certified test lab by Intertek to UL and CSA standards.
  • Be able to support the annual lab test equipment calibration while the outside calibration group is in the lab.
  • Be responsible for ordering all lab supplies.
  • Perform laboratory housekeeping daily.
  • Be the equipment operation expert on all existing and new lab equipment.
  • Be able to perform hands-on wiring when testing small appliances, as well as writing and submitting reports to Intertek.
  • Have or learn electrical knowledge of lab test equipment as well as experience soldering components for testing.
  • Learn to test small home appliance samples daily to UL and CSA standards and write test reports which will be submitted to Intertek for certification.
  •  Able to use a Windows-based PC, to run software programs for testing and gathering data. Also, to run lab designed test fixtures.
  •  Learn to analyze test samples of product and perform what tests are necessary per the product change (new product or alternate component).
  • Learn how to analyze any small home appliance product to the standards of which it must perform, as well as what components must be added or changed to alternate supply.
  • Learn the process to keep test equipment calibrated, as well as electrical and software programs functional to test and record data for the test report.
  • Monitor lab environment before and during test.
  • Learn to test, evaluate, and debug new and existing products.
  • Learn to Conduct Competitive Evaluations
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis in support of field failures and returns.
  • Develop /Conduct / Document tests as required, working with Product Engineer.
  •  Suggest new test fixture to automate test procedures, so that the lab remains efficient in its use.
  • Be able to manage and train a team of lab technicians to a schedule for completion of an engineering test, on time and under budget.
  • Support Engineering and Marketing departments with testing and reporting on existing, new, and competitive products.
  • Manage multiple assignments, within budget constraints and customers’ expectations.
  • Generate test report templates and test procedures.
  • Manage the lab for such items as, purchase test equipment, maintain test equipment, keep records on test equipment, monitor all test equipment operations.
  • Procure consumable lab test materials and control the test samples.
  • Schedule projects for conducting submission testing.
  • Complete testing and sign-off on report for submission to Lab Manager
  • File test data per current established procedure
  • Train new technicians

Essential Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in electrical engineering. Will consider strong work/related experience and continued education in an engineering curriculum.
  • Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English.
  • A self-starter with little supervision necessary.
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office, (Excel, Word, Outlook). 
  • Should be experienced with writing and implementing standard lab test reports, test procedures, summary reports and final reports, in an electronic format. 
  • Should be experienced with lab testing and troubleshooting of electro-mechanical devices, in a product test environment, with a preference on small / home appliances.
  • Have hands-on experience with wiring and soldering electronic components and reading schematics.
  • Should be knowledgeable of standard lab test equipment and gauging.
  • Should be experienced with lab approval agencies and their test methodologies.
  • Be detailed in the testing and gathering data to accuracy when preparing to run tests.
  • Have good analytical skills to determine root cause of product failure.
  • Should be capable of understanding the difference between a software failure versus hardware failure.
  • Should have the ability to schedule, run and maintain multiple technicians, testers, and projects at the same time, with an eye towards meeting deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Have good people skills.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements for a test lab would be a plus.

  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to use a computer keyboard and view a monitor for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally for business (% if needed)
  • We currently operate on a hybrid schedule; candidate must be willing to come into the office 50% of time
