About Technical Operations

BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients. 
 
SUMMARY: 
The BioMarin Summer Internship Program will enable students to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the processes and systems within BioMarin, while gaining an insight into the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. Over the course of 10 - 12 weeks our interns gain industry experience while working alongside our talented team on meaningful projects.
 
This role with be in Novato Manufacturing where our products are made.
JOB DESCRIPTION/PROJECT: 
We are looking for a motivated intern to join our manufacturing operations team. In this role, you will work on a key project to develop a standardized shift change protocol for our biotech manufacturing plant. This project will improve operational efficiency, enhance communication, and ensure product quality and safety across shifts.
This internship provides hands-on experience in a fast-paced biotech manufacturing environment, where you will work alongside experienced professionals to gain valuable insights into production processes and operational best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Data Collection & Analysis: Gather and analyze data on current shift change practices, documenting key areas for improvement.
Process Mapping: Create visual maps of existing processes to identify gaps, bottlenecks, or inconsistencies.
Stakeholder Interviews: Conduct interviews with shift supervisors, operators, and quality assurance staff to gather insights on current challenges and opportunities for a smoother transition between shifts.
Standardization Development: Collaborate with the team to design a standardized shift change procedure, including checklists, communication protocols, and documentation standards.
Pilot Testing: Assist in implementing and monitoring a pilot test of the new shift change procedure to assess effectiveness.
Feedback & Improvement: Collect feedback from team members on the pilot process and propose improvements to refine the standardized shift change procedure.
Documentation: Help create comprehensive documentation and training materials for the standardized shift change procedure.
Required Skills: 
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
 
Desired Skills: 
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes or experience in a production environment is a plus.
  • Experience with process mapping software is a bonus. 
 
Qualifications/Eligibility: 
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Biotech, Chemistry, Operations Management, or a related field.
  • Must be available to work full time, 40 hours a week. 
  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited U.S. based university or college and enrolled in the fall term after the completion of the internship OR have graduated within 1 year of the start of the program. 
  • Must be able to relocate if necessary and work at the designated site for the duration of the internship for on-site, hybrid roles. Some positions will be open to remote interns, but employee must be within United States borders.

In the U.S., the salary range for this position is $ 21 to $25 per hour, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
