Job Summary: 
PCMag is seeking a skilled and dynamic managing editor to help drive and expand our software and security coverage. We’re looking for an experienced leader to manage a team of staff writers, editors, and contributors covering one of our most important product categories, security, including antivirus, security suites, password managers, VPNs, and more. You'll also oversee coverage of PC and mobile operating systems, video/photo/audio editing, productivity, tax/personal finance apps, and other software.
You'll manage software and security content across reviews, roundups, help and how-to pieces, news, and more,  strategizing with our audience development team, analyzing article performance, identifying new story opportunities, and steering writers accordingly. 
The ideal candidate is passionate about technology, has extensive security coverage experience, and is a strong, performance-driven editor with well-established team management skills. This role will report to the executive editor of reviews. 
Job Duties:
  • Lead a team of writers, editors, and freelancers to cover a host of software and security services core to PCMag’s mission.
  • Mentor and coach writers and editors by providing continual feedback and encouraging professional development.
  • Assign and edit authoritative reviews, news, roundups, buying guides, how-to pieces, and other product-focused content.
  • Edit several stories daily.
  • Identify new story opportunities using data and audience analytics.
  • Determine the right mix of coverage and use SEO tools to ensure that your stories achieve the highest visibility possible.
  • Work with editors and writers to assess current testing processes and optimize them as necessary.
  • Manage content hubs and write newsletters.
  • Actively pitch your work for home page, social media, and video promotion.
  • Help drive our daily staff-wide editorial meeting.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key vendors in coverage areas, ensuring early access to new products. (Bonus points if you already have those relationships.)
  • Work with the art, product, social media, and video teams to improve our editorial processes.
  • Occasionally appear in videos for product reviews and other content related to the beats you manage.
Job Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of top-level editing experience at a major tech publication.
  • At least 5 years of experience managing and mentoring writers and editors.
  • Expansive knowledge across a range of software categories including: Antivirus, encryption software, operating systems, parental controls, password managers, security suites, VPNs, and much more. 
  • Experience with hands-on reviews, comparing products, and offering expert buying advice.
  • Intimate knowledge of grammar and style, and a quick ability to make rough copy shine.
  • Proven headline writing and story packaging chops.
  • You should have forward-thinking ideas about how to help our audience buy and use technology, along with a plan to turn those ideas into impactful stories.
  • An intimate understanding of SEO and familiarity with popular search optimization tools, but you also understand how to package a story to engage and delight your audience.
  • You have a proven track record with project and deadline management, plus demonstrated experience building and nurturing strong relationships and working effectively across teams. 
  • You should be comfortable using a CMS as well as image editing and data visualization programs.
  • You have a strong work ethic, a quick wit, and a sense of humor
  • We are a hybrid workplace. We have offices in New York City and are willing to accept applications from both local and remote candidates, but you must be able to work our core hours of 9AM-5PM ET weekdays.

Note: Disclosure as required by NYCHRL, the base salary range for this role when being performed in the City of New York is $100,000-$110,000.  Compensation for this business unit specific role is based on a variety of factors including experience, scope of the role, capabilities to perform the role, as well as business & company performance.
