About the Internship

With the significant Redevelopment programs underway at Newark Liberty International and JFK International Airports, the Infrastructure Asset Management Unit plays an increasingly integral role in the handover of project assets into Operations and Maintenance in the Aviation Department.  The unit works closely with Maintenance and Physical Plant staffs at the airports, as well as the Redevelopment, Project Management, Capital Planning, and Environmental Units in the Aviation Department.  The unit is advancing on several fronts to improve the alignment of maintenance and asset management by implementing best practices and providing complete, accurate data to management staff to enable more data-driven capital improvements. 

Responsibilities

  • Working with Infrastructure Asset Management staff, the intern will develop and execute a project within the internship period based on the intern’s skillsets that will complement implementation work currently underway.  The project should be structured in a way to be able to be a highlight on the intern’s resume as well as a benefit to the Aviation Department’s drive to complete execution of the Asset Management Program.  The intern will work closely with staff to establish the scope and schedule of the project as well as its execution.
  • Support the enhancement of airport mapping that links geographic assets (buildings, roadways, runways, etc.) to a geospatial platform currently being developed for the department. This task includes incorporating AutoCAD drawings into ARC GIS to develop a prototype of the Asset hierarchy in the airside and landside areas.
  • Support of data collection activities, collecting and organizing key components required for the successful implementation of the second phase of the department’s Asset Management implementation. This effort may include integration of Maximo, Power BI, and other systems currently in development.
  • Support of the Vertical Circulation remote monitoring program activities, including the reporting on all public facing elevators, escalators and moving walkaways.  This is an excellent opportunity involving one of the agency’s first forays into the Internet of Things.
  • Meet regularly with Aviation end users and ensure that asset management, maintenance management, and related functions within Aviation are developed consistently with EAM program efforts.
  • Attend regular meetings between Aviation and EAM stakeholders to ensure that Aviation developments continue to align with, inform, and are informed by EAM developments.
  • Develop status reports for Aviation Asset Management groups; manage the document control of all relevant development documents.
  • Additional or modified responsibilities may be considered depending on the skillset of the intern.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
  • Major in Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, Technology, Supply Chain, or related discipline

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to operate independently and proactively in an environment which may be partially or fully remote.
  • Technical knowledge or working experience in one or more of the following areas:  Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, Technology, Information Systems, Supply Chain, or related areas.
  • Experience or interest in in project management, engineering, architecture, facility maintenance, technology, or related field.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people with differing priorities, such as tenants, contractors, vendors, facility maintenance and operations staff, government, and industry officials.
  • Familiarity with or sincere desire to work with airport master planning, airport and facility planning and design, aeronautical navigation/security systems, airline industry business and operating practices, and development of airport functional plans.
  • Familiarity with utilities and governmental agencies.
  • Experienced user of IBM Maximo, Power BI, AutoCAD, GIS, Nearmap, Google EarthPro,   Adobe Acrobat and Visio).
  • Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, PowerBI, Visio, etc. are helpful.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A keen interest in contributing to the success of the NY &NJ region.
  • Interest in public service and/or transportation.
  • Exhibits a proactive commitment to ongoing professional development.

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026
  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026
  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
  • In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
