About the role

This position works collaboratively with academic and professional staff to deliver effective and efficient laboratory support for Occupational Therapy and Human Anatomy courses within the School of Health Sciences. Reporting to the National Laboratory Technician, the role is responsible for the preparation, operation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment within simulation teaching spaces that reflect real-life allied health environments. This includes setting up and dismantling practical scenarios, managing inventories, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. It also involves troubleshooting laboratory equipment issues and providing timely technical support to ensure smooth and safe laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, set up, and pack down laboratory and teaching spaces, materials, and equipment, and assist with the coordination and organisation of resources required for learning and teaching activities.
  • Provide routine technical advice, support, and instruction, including demonstrating the use of basic equipment and assisting in experiments and demonstrations.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and servicing of equipment and workspaces, and maintain stock levels, including the safe storage and handling of hazardous substances in line with university and legislative requirements.
  • Maintain uptodate knowledge of relevant regulations, legislation, policies, and procedures, and conduct routine risk assessments, reporting outcomes and escalating concerns to the National Laboratory Technician as required.
  • Monitor equipment loans to students, inspect outgoing and returned items to prevent damage or loss, and maintain laboratory records and databases for equipment, chemicals, and hazardous substances.
  • Provide general laboratory administration and assist in preparing laboratories for special events such as Open Day.

Qualifications, skills & experience

  • Possession of a Certificate IV or diploma with relevant work experience; or a posttrades certificate with extensive experience and onthejob training; or a Certificate III with extensive relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Proven laboratory experience, including laboratory methods, techniques, safety procedures, and the safe handling of hazardous materials, with demonstrated proficiency in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
  • Experience in the tertiary or higher education sector (highly desirable), with the ability to support students and staff in conducting experiments and using laboratory resources.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, health and safety standards, and relevant state and industry regulations, legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships, collaborate across multifunctional teams, and provide responsive service.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills, including the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, high attention to detail, and competency with software such as the Microsoft Office Suite.
