Environmental Justice Organizer

The Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition (MEJC) is building a future rooted in justice, sustainability, and community power. To keep our movement strong, we’re seeking an Organizer II and Senior Organizer I to strengthen our movement through leadership development, member engagement, and strategic campaigns. These hybrid-onsite/remote roles based in Detroit, MI, are great opportunities for people who thrive in collaborative environments, value equity, and wants to be part of a dynamic team driving change across Michigan.
What you’ll do
Both positions play a key role in strengthening community engagement, supporting campaigns, and growing our statewide base of environmental justice leaders. Day to day, you can expect to:
- Build the leadership and capacity of members, partners, and community residents
- Support and engage members through meetings, trainings, and relationship-building
- Participate in and support action-based campaigns, advocacy efforts, and community mobilization
- Collaborate with staff and partners to design and implement organizing strategies
- Help build a strong base of environmental justice leaders across the state
- Represent the organization in community spaces, coalition settings, and public forums
- Contribute to statewide alliance-building efforts with social and environmental justice partners
- Support electoral and advocacy work, including organizing community participation
- Engage residents in movement-building efforts for a clean, healthy, and safe future
Our Senior Organizer I will lead the development and execution of MEJC’s organizing strategies, with a focus on advancing utility accountability and environmental justice in Michigan. This role combines campaign management, staff leadership, and strategic organizational planning. Additionally, our Senior Organizer I can expect to:
- Travel statewide
- Lead and manage staff, oversee data/metrics, and guide campaign evaluation and strategy
- Coordinate higher-level advocacy and electoral (C3/C4) tactics and represent the organization in statewide coalitions
- Manage project budgets and resource allocation
Our Organizer II will focus on community engagement, education, and training programs, helping grow Michigan’s utility accountability and environmental justice movement. This role works closely with staff, members, and volunteers to design and implement educational campaigns and fellowship programs. Additionally, our Organizer II can expect to:
- Travel regionally
- Handle program management, and the launching of our individual membership program
- Create community-facing events, digital outreach, and learning environments
What you need to thrive in this role
- Excellent interpersonal skills, community-building, and movement building practices
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and take initiative
- Love for Earth, all our relations, and understanding of how resources impact lives
- Collaborative in spirit and practice with clear ability to bring others into meetings, facilitate well, and mobilize people for collective action
- Structured and outcomes-driven organizing experience with demonstrated time management and task management
Our Senior Organizer I Will Additionally Need:
- 4-7 years of experience
- Intermediate NGP Van software experience
- Experience with relational organizer software (Mobilize, Impactive)
- Intermediate understanding of policy issue areas
- Large event planning of experience – over 100+ people
- Direct action planning experience
- Experience managing social justice issue campaigns
Our Organizer II Will Additionally Need:
- 1-2 years of experience
- Passionate about advancing environmental and social justice
- Quick learner, able to adapt to new challenges and campaigns
About us
The Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition (MEJC) is a statewide coalition working to achieve a clean, healthy, and safe environment for Michigan’s most vulnerable residents. We focus on the Jemez and EJ Principles through popular education, grassroots policy advocacy, and organizing our communities for systems change. MEJC convened in 2011 to grow the Environmental Justice movement in Michigan. We lead campaigns to fight for Energy Justice and Clean Air as well as engage in federal and state policy. MEJC hopes to define an ambitious Environmental Justice agenda for Michigan that centers Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities and is free of fossil fuels and false solutions.
