Staff Mechanical Engineer
Description
Reporting directly to the VP of Real Estate, the Staff Mechanical Engineer (SME) is the department and organization resource and subject matter expert for projects, systems, and components within the technical discipline. The SME will provide assessments, recommendations, and direction as a partner to the established Facilities and Construction teams to ensure reliable and efficient operation of the organizations in Hospitals. This position will play a key role in the planning/execution of our de novo growth and renovation projects and is focused on the execution and oversight of professional activities within the mechanical discipline. The individual will function with significant autonomy guided by established objectives, provide routine updates, and report on metrics and end results.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to
- Lead and execute responsibilities related to the design, specification, review, and development of mechanical infrastructure systems and equipment, for new and existing MedVet hospitals.
- Focus areas include building mechanical infrastructure primarily focused on HVAC, building management systems and controls, and plumbing, including refrigeration, compressed air, fire protection systems, natural gas, LPG, plumbing, wastewater, and other thermal-fluid systems supporting medical processes.
- Responsibilities include system evaluations, troubleshooting, controls of modifications, engineering studies, calculations, design specifications, project estimates, detailed design, procurement, installation, acceptance testing, and performance audits.
- Apply project management methodologies to set targets, track progress, and report status.
- Collaborate with internal Facilities, Project Management, and Operations teams and external vendors, contractors, consultants, and engineering firms.
- Define project scope and evaluate available options before selecting the optimal solution.
- Evaluate repair and replacement proposals to ensure proper approach, scope, and cost.
- Develop project requirements, plans, and schedules
- Conduct mechanical engineering studies and calculations to support detailed designs.
- Gather design data from existing systems to verify performance and compatibility.
- Create conceptual and final designs to address deficiencies or meet project needs from various departments.
- Oversee the development of detailed engineering drawings and specifications that support Hospital operating needs.
- Prepare cost estimates, secure, and review quotations.
- Draft white papers and business cases; assist other teams with document preparation.
- Interpret domestic and international codes and standards with local engineering support.
- Review work orders and requisitions to initiate implementation.
- Monitor project progress to maintain schedules, resolve issues, control costs, and report status.
- Ensure successful performance testing, documentation, and project acceptance.
- Inspect conditions in the field and construction sites.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate has a minimum of a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or other related field and 5 years of engineering experience with project management and operations exposure. In addition, this position requires:
- Strong communication skills
- Construction and operations experience required
- Proven leadership in corporate and engineering teams
- Strong multitasking and organizational skills
- Experience and confidence in investigating issues, troubleshooting components, thoughtful adjustment of control settings, and monitoring the results.
- Familiar with commercial HVAC systems; split systems, packaged air handling (constant or variable), variable refrigerant flow, etc. and major manufacturers; Trane, Carrier, Daikin, Mitsubishi, etc. and their control systems.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and mechanical engineering software
- Experience with NFPA codes and FM Insurance guidelines
- Ability to climb ladders and work on roofs or scaffolding
- Occasional light lifting and hand tool use
- Possession or pursuit of Professional Engineering License, preferred
Location
While the MedVet headquarters is in Columbus Ohio and there is a concentration of Hospitals in this region, this position can be in a major city with strong preference to the central United States and airline hub cities (e.g. Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte).

The posted range for this position is $77,000-$105,000 which is the expected starting base salary range for an employee who is new to the role to fully proficient in the role. Many factors go into determining employee pay within the posted range including prior experience, current skills, location/labor market, internal equity, etc.
