We’re looking for you.

The Certified Scrub Technologist functions as a member of the patient care team, under the supervision of the physician, registered nurse and/or the unit director.  This position provides technical skills in the role of the surgical scrub during operative procedures.  This is demonstrated by hours serving as a Surgical Assistant during surgeries, sponsorship by one or more surgeons, a degree in a related field such as Nursing or health, real life experience such as work as an MD, nurse, EMT or military medic.  The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) oversees the credentialing of both surgical tech and assistants with their Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) exam. 

Responsibilities

  • Promotes the vision, mission and PI philosophy of LMH.
  • Utilizes effective interpersonal skills to promote teamwork, collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to deliver optimal patient services.
  • Performs skills from skills checklist accurately.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities, initiating improvement through proper channels.
  • Respects and demonstrates confidentiality.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates accountability for maintaining and advancing professional competency, meeting educational requirements pertinent to practice.
  • Demonstrates flexibility regarding scheduling.
  • Adheres to safety policies and procedures and displays knowledge of hospital’s emergency code procedures.
  • Participates in staff meetings.
  • May participate in QA, PI activities and other hospital committees.
  • May participate in communications with the surgical representatives with the various vendors.
  • Demonstrates expertise with instrumentation, setting up the case and physician preferences.
  • Proficiency in the following tasks:
  • Cauterizing wounds and vessels
  • Packing sponges in body
  • Positioning patient to maintain circulation and access for surgeon
  • Placing clamps and sutures
  • Closing skin with adhesives, sutures or staples etc.
  • Applying direct pressure on veins and tissue
  • Performing or aiding in patient suction, drainage and irrigation
  • Hemostasis:  The stopping of excess bleeding and blood flow
  • Immobilizing patients on the operating table
  • Performs other duties as needed or assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • BLS Certification
  • Certified Surgical Technologist Credential (CST)

Preferred:

  • Graduate of an Operating room Technician/Surgical Technologist Program
  • Prior work experience as Operating Room Technician/Surgical Technologist
  • Degree in related field such as Nursing or health
  • Minimum one year experience
