EPCOR’s Ontario Commercial Services is hiring an Inspector/ Locator (FullTime, Permanent position) to join our Electricity Distribution team working out of Collingwood, Ontario. We are seeking candidates with hands-on underground utility locating experience. An electrical background (e.g., electrician) is considered a strong asset. This opportunity is ideal for a junior-level candidate with foundational experience in electrical utility field operations who is looking to build their career in a safety-focused, field-based role.

 

In this role, you’ll provide hydro locates to support safe excavation and regulatory compliance while also inspecting new and replacement utility infrastructure, including duct systems and transformer installations, across all areas serviced by EPCOR. You’ll ensure all work meets required specifications and standards, playing a key role in maintaining the safety, quality, and reliability of EPCOR’s utility services and distribution network.

 

What you’d be responsible for

Reporting to the Associate Director, EEDO General Manager, you will be responsible for the following (but not limited to):

 

  • Supporting Collingwood Hydro Operations by contributing to operational plans and maintaining effective working relationships across roles.
  • Delivering results against established performance metrics, including safety, environmental compliance, and customer service.
  • Locating utility infrastructure for customers and contractors, ensuring safe excavation and preventing damage, while preparing and providing accurate reports and drawings.
  • Operating and maintaining locating equipment and underground locating tools, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of all locates.
  • Documenting and recording all installation and locate-related data accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Performing meter disconnects and reconnects for non-payment, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Inspecting third-party installations to ensure compliance with EPCOR’s Conditions of Supply and applicable regulations (e.g., Reg. 22/04) and signing off as required.
  • Applying working knowledge of Electrical Utility Safety Rules (EUSR) to all tasks.
  • Providing cross-departmental support and backup, as required, to meet operational and corporate objectives.
  • Demonstrating a safety-focused, accountable, and customer-oriented approach, while contributing to a high-performance and disciplined work environment.

 

What’s required to be successful

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience and behaviours:

 

Qualifications & Licensing:

  • A Grade 12 diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education).
    • Valid Cable Locating and Electrical Awareness Certificates (EUSR) or equivalent are considered assets.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Motor Vehicle Operator's License
    • 6 or fewer demerits (subject to review) at the time of hire is required; prior unsafe driving infractions may result in non-selection and GDL licenses are not accepted.
    • Candidates must be eligible for an EPCOR driver’s permit and may be required to provide a 5-year Commercial Driver’s Abstract at the time of hire.

 

Experience that includes:

  • 1+ year of experience in the electrical utility industry, with exposure to field operations
  • Working with GIS systems for capturing and inputting data required for inspections.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Working knowledge of electrical underground distribution drawings, construction methods, utility standards, and specifications
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical distribution (construction, inspection, operation, testing, and maintenance)
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, drawings, safety rules, procedures, and technical documentation

Wage: Starting at $45.57 per hour (Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and based on a combination of factors as outlined in the Collective Agreement.)
