The Manager, Laboratory Operations is accountable for the efficient and effective operation and management of the department at both administrative and technical levels. Primary functions include overall service and/or technical excellence, utilization of resources, budget implementation and controls, and on-going performance and development of staff.

How YOU will make a difference:
  • Responsible for the scientific and technical functioning of the laboratory
  • Ensure that appropriate methodology and equipment are in place
  • Review quality control and proficiency test, recommending corrective action where appropriate
  • Ensure review with Medical Director where applicable
  • Review incomplete work and interprets difficult cases
  • Responsible for ensuring all abnormal and STAT reports are handled as outlined in department guidelines
  • Develop, modify, implement and communicate department related policies, procedures and manuals
  • Provide assistance and counseling to employees, as required, on the interpretation and administration of department related policies and procedures
  • Ensure updates are distributed, filed and appropriately posted for notification
  • Identify, prioritize and develop annual department budget needs
  • Responsible for financial accountability for departmental budget formulation and controls
  • Monitor supplies and orders routine stock as required from stockroom and E-req.
  • Oversee inventory activity and assisting in resolution of issues
  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, placement, performance management, counseling and selection for department positions
  • To ensure each employee receives proper instruction and safety training for each job assigned
  • Responsible for the operational functions of the department including scheduling, training and orientation of staff
  • Develop, recommend and/or deliver training and development initiatives for all department staff
  • Record and submit attendance sheets and submit timesheets to payroll, ensuring accuracy and timely submission
  • Monitor compliance, collection, preparation, and analysis of shift or unit reports and statistics
  • Delegate and monitor duties of staff and maintain facilities and equipment
 
What YOU bring to the role:
  • Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist OR: 
  • A member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia who has at least one year of post-graduate experience in a laboratory or laboratories, working in a relevant laboratory specialty.
  • Has obtained from a university an academic doctorate degree in a relevant area of chemical, physical or biological science and has at least one year of post-graduate experience in a laboratory.
  • Has obtained from a university a masters degree in a relevant area of chemical, physical or biological science and has at least two years of relevant post-graduate training or experience in a laboratory.
  • Has obtained from a university a bachelors degree in a relevant area of chemical, physical or biological science and has at least four years of relevant post-graduate training or experience in a laboratory. 
  • 7 to 10 years of previous managerial experience and demonstrated increased responsibility in a clinical environment demonstrating readiness for a management role
  • Ability to perform under pressure, manage multiple projects, respond to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to respond to employees and management needs often in stressful situations
 
Working Conditions:     
  • Normal office environment
  • Medical laboratory environment
 
Pay rate: $84,000 to $105,000 annually  
The hiring pay range has been established; however, the final pay offer will be determined by taking into consideration various factors including but not limited to, level of experience and education requirements.
