About the Job
The Systems Engineering (SE) team works closely with our Project Management Office (PMO) within our professional services organization to deliver business value to our end users, channel partners, and for OTTO Motors.  SEs design and integrate fleets of OTTO autonomous mobile robots (AMR) and software at our customer facilities. In addition, the SE team delivers training to our integration partners and end-users, and evaluates use cases to establish guidelines, standards, and best practices for how OTTO Motors products can be used by the market, specifically by our integrator network. Furthermore, the SE team is a major contributor to defining our product requirements and is a major influencer of our product roadmap. Additionally, being part of the Managed Services department, the SE team is also responsible for operational support and improvement of OTTO Motors solutions deployed and in operation at our customer facilities, for which we provide ongoing operational and maintenance support. 
Primary responsibilities:
  • understanding customer requirements and ensuring clarity of all requirements prior to detailed design; Ability to document and convey concepts and architectures of industrial automation solutions.
  • consulting with applications engineering during the requirements and concept definition process; documenting/updating the requirements when needed
  • detailed design of AMR systems using OTTO Motors products to meet the customer requirements; this includes workflow design, attachment design, map design and development/modification middle layer software logic using Ignition OPC/UA and/or PLC logic design and modification.
  • Middle layer software design, development, validation & integration to interface between OTTO Fleet Manager API and any third party automation systems in the facility (PLCs, WMS, ERP, MES systems)
  •  Authoring scope of requirements, scope of work and system design documents and managing the technical scope and design of the our solutions in collaboration with Project Management to technically manage our contractual scope to our customers as well as to manage delivery of the right solution by our subcontractors.
  • support the discrete event simulation process by being the lead SE in verifying the validity of all the inputs required for simulation and working with the customer as well as the internal sim team in design process to ensure solution meets customer requirements.
  • project planning for the deliverables and work packages you own;
  • lead and support on-site deployment and integration of designed system as required, commissioning & integration of AMR systems at client facilities throughout the world; this includes traveling to customer or integration partner facility for on-site deployment and integration with facility side automation equipment
  • authoring & executing acceptance test plans for validation of system functionality and performance;
  • Ensure technical integrity and consistency of the solution throughout every phase of its life-cycle. Verification, validation, and tracking of system compliance to customer requirements and design specifications.
  • optimizing system performance through analysis, simulation, and experimentation and implementation of improvements, while managing scope as agreed with our customers and subcontractors.;
  • communicating technical details and status to the customer and broader project team
  • consulting with 3rd party solution providers, subcontractors and integration partners on all of the above
  • delivery of training to integration partners as well as end users
  • consulting with internal team members and integration partners on all of the above
  • troubleshooting software & hardware technical issues using internal tools available; solving new and challenging technical problems related to the above
  • Support to deployed solutions in operations at our customers facilities in terms of continuous optimization activities, Tier3 and on call or backfill support to the operational support functions.
Additional responsibilities:
  • authoring new product requirements based on the lessons learned from your design and commissioning activities;
  • working with the systems engineering team to improve project/department tools, processes, and working relationships with other departments;
  • ability to travel for business within North America, Europe and Asia; ~30 - 40 % travel commitment over the year (travel mostly contained to Canada and USA).  Trips to site would typically be 2 weeks on - 2 weeks off during the project integration phase.

Required background:
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience managing technical scope of solutions to customers and/or subcontractors.
  • 8+ years of experience commissioning & integrating industrial automated equipment or software that interfaces to the equipment
  • middle layer software design experience to enable multi-device/system integration within facility automation
  • college/university diploma or degree in an engineering, design, or industrial controls type of field
  • experience working directly with clients/end-users, as well as subcontractors
Required skills:
  • planning and organization (how to approach and solve a problem, work breakdown to achieve the end goal, etc.)
  • strong communicator, verbal and written. Strong facilitation skills.
  • self-motivated and organized with a keen eye for detail
  • Demonstrated ability of working with Linux
  • authoring and modifying software code (python, C++, or other)
  • PLC design and integration experience
  • interpretation & design analysis of mechanical drawings and electrical schematics
  • Understanding of customer perspective of manufacturing and warehouse/DC operations such as production design &  scheduling constraints, personnel allocation and cost justifications and Understanding of lean manufacturing principles.

  • data analysis experience

  • experience with inductive automation ignition OPC/UA software
  • middle layer software design experience to enable multi-device/system integration within facility automation
