CICONIX, a Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) specializing in military and Veterans healthcare, is seeking a Forensic Scientist 4 to assist the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) provide medical-legal investigations, forensic analysis, and pathology services for U.S. military personnel, DoD civilians, and eligible individuals.

 

Job Overview:

This position serves as an Assistant Technical Leader or section lead in DNA casework or non-casework sections, overseeing DNA analysis, program development, and staff supervision in forensic DNA laboratories. Responsibilities include managing DNA typing casework, providing technical support in bioinformatics and lab automation, and testifying as an expert witness. Candidates must meet FBI QA Accreditation standards, holding a master’s degree in a relevant science, with coursework in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics, and have at least three years of forensic DNA laboratory experience.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative and Documentation Support:

  • Perform filing, transcription, data entry, and document preparation using Microsoft Office.
  • Prepare and edit management support documentation.

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Serve as an Assistant Technical Leader (ATL) within casework sections or as a section lead in non-casework sections.
  • Supervise staff conducting DNA typing casework and investigative studies on tissue identification.

Program Development and Maintenance:

  • Assist in the maintenance and development of forensic DNA programs as directed by a supervisor.

Casework and Expert Testimony:

  • Oversee DNA typing casework, ensuring adherence to standards and accuracy.
  • Testify as an expert witness in court on DNA analysis findings when required.

Technical Assistance and Support:

  • Provide technical support in bioinformatics, IT, and laboratory automation.
  • Support resource and logistical management activities within the DNA operations section.

Educational and Training Activities:

  • Organize and present educational activities related to DNA analysis and forensic science.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with FBI QA Accreditation standards for forensic DNA analysis.
  • Maintain quality assurance standards in casework processes and laboratory practices.

 

Education:  

  • TLs and ATLs must meet the FBI QA Accreditation requirements
  • Minimum, a Master's degree in a biology, chemistry or forensic science related area and successfully completed twelve (12) semester or equivalent credit hours from a combination of undergraduate and graduate course work covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics or population genetics; twelve (12) semester or equivalent credit hours shall include at least one graduate level course registering three (3) or more semester or equivalent credit hours;

Experience:

  • Three years of forensic DNA laboratory experience obtained at a laboratory where forensic DNA testing was conducted for the identification and evaluation of biological evidence in criminal matters
  • Minimum of three years of human DNA (current or previous) experience as a qualified analyst on forensic samples

 

Positions are contingent and will begin upon contract award
