SUMMARY:

The Cell Culture Process Development department at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. is seeking an experienced molecular and cell biologist at the Research Associate 2 or Senior Research Associate 1 level for research and development activities. This individual will be part of an upstream group focusing on recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV)-based vectors for BioMarin’s gene therapy pipeline. The successful candidate will work as part of a team on mammalian and insect cell production platforms with the goal of better understanding and improving the productivity and quality of rAAV.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cell culture (maintenance, expansion, infection).
  • Viral vector design, small-scale production and purification.
  • Characterization assays and evaluation of performance of rAAV.
  • Discovery and platform development.
  • Design, plan, and perform experiments, diligently document the results. Prioritize tasks, manage time effectively.
  • Being self-motivated and proactive.
  • Critical thinking; troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Teamwork; present results in team meetings; conduct internal and external collaborations.
  • Flexibility in a fast-paced changing environment; be willing to accept responsibilities outside of the initial job description.

EDUCATION

A degree in molecular biology, cell biology, virology or any related field, meeting the minimum requirements below:

For Research Associate 2: Bachelor’s degree with 4 years of experience, or Master’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience in academia or in the biotechnological industry.

For Senior Research Associate 1: Bachelor’s degree with 6 years of experience, or Master’s degree with 4 years of relevant experience in academia or in the biotechnological industry.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Hands-on expertise in molecular biology methods.
  • Hands-on expertise in cell culture.
  • Proficiency with DNA analysis software, cloning and primer design.
  • Analytical tools: PCR, ELISA, western blot, electrophoresis.
  • Critical thinking, excellent data analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong ability to work in a team.
  • Presentation of results in written and oral formats.

Desired:

  • Prior experience with AAV is strongly desired.
  • Viral vector design, expression cassette design, small-scale production and virus transduction.
  • AAV purification (AKTA, chromatography and density separation).
  • Cell transfection, cell engineering and clone selection.
  • Experience with baculovirus and/or other viral vectors.
  • Flow cytometry, data analysis.
  • AUC, SEC-MALS, Octet, alkaline gel, mass spectrometry, next-generation sequencing, etc.
