The Art Gallery of Ontario is currently searching for a creative and energetic Curatorial Assistant, Arts of Global Africa & the Diaspora to join the Curatorial team!

Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario (“the AGO”) is one of the largest art museums in North America, with a collection of close to 100,000 works. Through the collection as well as collaborations with leading museums around the world, the AGO presents wide-ranging exhibitions and programs to approximately 1 million visitors annually.

Reporting directly to the Curator, Arts of Global Africa and the Diaspora, the Curatorial Assistant will be responsible for assisting with exhibition development and collection initiatives, administrative work in support of research, publications, acquisitions, public and digital programs, and other general curatorial functions. In addition, the Curatorial Assistant may have the opportunity to generate original programs and exhibitions.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • MA in art history with emphasis in 19th and 20th century Modern and/or Contemporary African Art and the African Diaspora
  • Experience and training in proper handling of art works in a Gallery or Museum setting an asset
  • Familiarity with museum operations and collections databases; experience with The Museum System (TMS) a plus
  • Foreign language skills a plus
  • Curatorial experience an asset
  • Well developed research, organizational, interpersonal, public relations, written and verbal communication skills
  • Superior research and writing skills
  • Working knowledge of the installation process for works of art a plus
  • Demonstrated experience working with a variety of computer software packages
  • Ability to work collaboratively and a commitment to meeting deadlines
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Professional demeanor and diplomatic skills required
  • Excellent attention to detail with ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment a must
  • Ability to be proactive, use independent judgment and initiative
  • Prior experience working in an office environment required
  • Publication experience an asset
