We are in the midst of an exciting, multi-year campaign. In just over two years we have raised more than $100M to build our new Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery, while securing $15M annually for operating funding, endowment, art acquisitions and special projects.
Planning will begin in the coming months for the next phases of our campaign dedicated to enhancing the AGO’s leadership in the international art world and inspiring exemplary philanthropy here at home.
Summary of Function:
The Associate Director, Philanthropy is an experienced major gift professional with a track record of cultivating, closing and stewarding gifts at the five and six figure level in both annual giving and campaigns. In this role, they hold a donor portfolio, and independently raise and steward up to $2M+ annually in cash gifts. This includes the development of complex, multi-year philanthropic strategies to increase both annual, designated and campaign support of the museum.
Working with a partnership approach, the Associate Director, Philanthropy builds independent, trust-based relationships with AGO curatorial, education and programming staff, donors and trustees to advance the mission of the AGO. They are skilled at navigating and effectively matching institutional and mission related priorities with donor and AGO partner interests. They have a history of successfully working within a multi-faceted charitable environment serving multiple stakeholders and priorities.
The position works closely with the Senior Director, Major Gifts and Campaign to manage and inspire the overall work of the team, including development, tracking and strategy related to annual goals and activity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develops and manages a comprehensive portfolio of up to 100 current and prospective major gift donors throughout the complete gift cycle. Develops and implements strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors at $25K+ with a focus on gifts and pledges of $100K+.
- Achieves personal revenue target of up to $2M+ annually; identifies opportunities to grow this portfolio year over year.
- Leads face-to-face donor/prospect meetings, including those with AGO colleagues and curators.
- Ensures compelling and meaningful customized stewardship for major gift donors to deepen engagement with the museum while ensuring equity with the overarching stewardship program.
- Manages staff and deliverables in accordance with department systems and procedures and applicable collective agreements and AGO’s policies and procedures on security, administration, human resources, and department manager/supervisor responsibilities for workplace health and safety.
- Handles multiple, sometimes competing projects concurrently.
- Relationship building with direct reports, colleagues, donors, volunteers and Trustees and related organizations.
Relevant Qualifications:
- Comprehensive knowledge of fundraising principles, practices, techniques, trends and sector issues and CRA guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to build a culture of philanthropy, equity and partnership-based relationships within an organization.

- Well-developed ability to be creative and innovative with respect to prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation.
- Demonstrated track record of successful management of volunteers.
- Strong project management skills; well-organized, detail-oriented, effective at follow-through and priority setting.
- Effective comprehension and application of confidentiality and diplomacy.
- Budgeting skills.
- Well-developed computer literacy including development/fundraising applications, spreadsheets and CRM.
- Passion for art; knowledge of art an asset.
- Experience working in complex non-profit organization.
- A minimum three years of experience in complex, major gift and campaign fundraising environment.
- University degree or equivalent education and experience.
