We are currently seeking a Regular Full-Time Manager, Camp, Courses and Studio Programming
to join our Education & Programming team. Working with the Richard & Elizabeth Currie Chief, Education & Programming, the Manager, Courses, Camps and Studio Programming actively guides the AGO’s Courses, Camps & Studio Programming to develop, implement and assess programming that responds to the needs and interests of our diverse audiences. They are actively involved in identifying significant trends in global contemporary visual arts learning and programming along with the ideas, trends and best practices in contemporary culture, museum programming, and learning, including supporting campers and students in our care. They will work in consultation with colleagues, internally and externally, to create and realize all programs and ensure they support the AGO values of art, audience and learning, and serve diverse AGO audiences and aligns with AGO’s values of respect, openness, collaboration, and accountability. They will actively manage and collaborate with the Courses & Camps team and support the overall direction and goals of the Education & Programming Department, including budgeting and the collection and analysis of data to inform Courses, Camps & Studio Programming decisions that includes child and youth courses, adult courses, and summer camps for children.
The rate of pay for this position is $89,180 - $111,456 per annum.
What is this position responsible for?
Program Strategy and Development
- Working with the Richard and Elizabeth Currie, Chief, Education and Programming, guides a collaborative Courses, Camps, and Studio Programming team in the development and delivery of studio-based courses for all ages, camps, and institution-wide studio programming, including corporate, community, and internal workshops, that enhance engagement and learning through the AGO’s exhibitions and collections
- Contributes to the development of the AGO as a site of dynamic global contemporary programs; builds and initiates positive relationships with museum colleagues and the larger cultural community, locally, nationally and internationally.
- Position the AGO as a leader in Course, Camp, and Studio Programming broadly and within the museum field.
- Collaborate with the Development Division to enhance fundraising opportunities and donor appreciation.
- Collaborate with Brand and Business Development to strategically place our programs in market to meet our audience and revenue goals.
Staff Management, Operations, and Visitor Experience
- Manage and support the logistical planning and onsite coordination of all courses, camps and studio programs.
- Determines and monitors adherence to professional programming practices ensuring programs deliver stated institutional goals and visitor outcomes.
- Manage the work performance of related Courses and Camps staff with the support of the Richard & Elizabeth Currie Chief, Education & Programming and when required. This includes hiring, training, assigning, scheduling, monitoring work completion, and managing work performance.
- Provide best practice training, mentorship and management of the Program Assistants, Program Coordinators, Adult Art Instructors, Children and Youth Art Instructors, seasonal Summer Camp Staff and Volunteers to ensure they run successful programs that align with AODA and Health & Safety standards as well as Education & Programming departmental goals and the overall AGO Mission and Vision.
- Advise and support staff and instructors on best practices related to the care, supervision, and safeguarding of children and youth aged 17 and under, as well as campers and students of all ages with developmental or physical disabilities, ensuring alignment with custody-of-care standards, AODA requirements, health and safety protocols, and AGO policies.
- Oversee, develop, shape, and implement critical schedules for AGO course, camp and studio programs and ensure that all deliverables related to the programs are met – liaising with visitor services, facilities, security, communications, design, and development, and other stakeholders throughout the organization when appropriate. Ensure the seamless execution of all programs.
- Manage delivery of services in accordance with department systems and procedures, apply collective agreements, and AGO’s policies and procedures on security, administration, human resources, and departmental manager/supervisor responsibilities for workplace health and safety.
- Liaise with all artists, performers, speakers, and guests to ensure programs are organized and implemented with excellence.
- Lead the timely and effective resolution of inquiries, conflicts or concerns involving participants, families, instructors, and staff, applying best practices in conflict resolution while balancing individual needs, institutional policies, and the safety and well-being of all participants.
Program Evaluation, Partnerships, and Public Engagement
- Work to develop suitable metrics and evaluation tools to effectively collect and analyze data for all programs to better understand and articulate impact over short and extended periods of time (seasonally, annually, and year over year), and to inform decisions about programming, audience engagement, attendance, revenue and areas of improvement.
- Oversee the delivery of copy and images for all programs.
- Promote the AGO to the art community and the general public; act as host and speak publicly.
- Build positive relationships with external stakeholders; participate in AGO’s public, Board, donor programs and assist with donor cultivation when required.
Financial Planning and Resource Management
- Through prioritized directives form the Chief, Education and Programming, manages expenses and budgets, set revenue targets to deliver on annual financial goals in collaboration with the Associate Director, Lifelong Learning, Engagement and Operations.
- Administer departmental budgets and determine the best allocation of funds to achieve financial equilibrium.
Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
What are we looking for?
- Demonstrated minimum of 4-6 years of direct experience in program development, budgeting, administration, production and supervision of camps and studio-based courses including management and supervision of instructors, artists, volunteers, program production, coordination, and communication for diverse public audiences.
- Demonstrated minimum of 5-7 years of direct experience working directly with students and/or campers of varying ages (children and youth ages 2-18 and adults 18+) and varying skill sets and needs, including children and adults with disabilities. Demonstrates extensive understanding of and has direct management experience working with a team that takes Custody of Care of children, students or campers.
- Graduate level degree, or equivalent experience in Studio-Based Visual Arts, Art Education, and/or Education with relevant studio experience.
- Demonstrates a strong knowledge of museum education best practices regarding studio programming, intergenerational community programs, visual art, and contemporary culture, accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Minimum 3-5 years of related experience using software to schedule, plan, and coordinate with multiple stakeholders internal and external. Knowledge of CampBrain or similar software to coordinate course or camp administration is an asset.
- Strong experience leading group facilitation and team training in a studio based and/or educational environment.
- Excellent conflict resolution and customer service skills. Highly developed organizational and public relations skills, interpersonal and verbal. Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience processing complex information efficiently and effectively while adhering to tight timelines.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate discretion, and handle sensitive information with integrity.
