Director, Financial Planning and Analysis

Total Wine & More is seeking a Director of Financial Planning and Analysis - Merchandising to join our FP&A team in our Bethesda, MD office. This is a key strategic role in driving financial performance and decision-making for the merchandising organization. This leader will work hand in hand with the Chief Merchandising Officer, partner with merchandising team, supply chain, and finance teams to provide data-driven insights, optimize profitability, and enhance financial forecasting. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of retail or consumer goods financial planning, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders. This role reports to the SVP of Business Planning and Financial Analysis.
You will
- Lead the financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes for the merchandising team, ensuring alignment with overall company goals.
- Develop and maintain financial models to support category performance analysis, pricing strategies, and promotional effectiveness.
- Provide strategic recommendations to enhance profitability and optimize product mix.
- Partner with merchandising leadership to develop long-term financial strategies and scenario planning.
- Develop, Establish and Coordinate IBP for the merchandising function.
- Monitor and analyze sales trends, gross margin performance, and inventory productivity.
- Deliver actionable insights on key business drivers, including product category performance, vendor profitability, and markdown optimization.
- Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure financial and operational success.
- Work cross-functionally with supply chain and inventory teams to optimize working capital and reduce excess inventory.
- Serve as the primary finance partner for merchandising leadership, providing financial guidance and challenge where necessary.
- Collaborate with pricing and marketing teams to assess promotional strategies and their financial impact.
- Support vendor negotiations with financial insights to enhance margin and profitability.
- Present financial findings and recommendations to executive leadership in a clear and compelling manner.
- Drive process improvements to enhance forecasting accuracy, reporting efficiency, and financial decision-making.
- Leverage financial systems and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) to streamline reporting.
- Ensure financial controls and compliance with company policies and accounting standards.
You will come with
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field (MBA or CPA preferred).
- 8+ years of progressive experience in financial planning & analysis, preferably in retail, merchandising, or consumer goods.
- Strong analytical skills with experience in financial modeling and scenario analysis.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence senior leadership.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, financial planning software (e.g., Hyperion, Anaplan), and data visualization tools.
- Strong business acumen and ability to translate financial data into strategic insights.
- Experience leading teams and managing cross-functional projects.

Total Wine & More considers several factors when establishing compensation. Estimated salaries determined by third parties have not been validated by Total Wine & More. The exempt compensation range for this position is $115,700 - $235,200. Compensation may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, market location, job-related knowledge, skills and/or experience.
