Terran Orbital is seeking an experienced Director, Spacecraft Design Engineering, to join our growing team as a key leadership team member. The Director leads a multiple-discipline team of Design, Analysis, Software, and Systems engineers. The Director will apply their technical skills and experience in leading, developing, and guiding the development of Spacecraft Systems supporting the sustainable growth of the business. The candidate will share their technical expertise and technical leadership in mentoring, training, process/tool development, and leading a technical engineering team. The Director leads key elements of the process and technological roadmaps for Spacecraft Systems, Ground & Flight Software.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Support engineering department operations and provide organizational drive for analysis, software, mechanical and electrical system design teams within Spacecraft Design and Engineering
- Establish Lifecycle Best Practices, Frameworks, Guidelines, Standards, and Processes within engineering and with Systems Engineering, Components & Modules Group, production, programs
- Ensure domain expertise of the team and develop technical talent to sustain expertise within the organization in support of current and developing needs
- Develop and implement knowledge capture and transfer
- Strategic plans for engineering processes and tools to support technology road map and business plans
- Cultivate innovation: research, study, and propose the use of advanced technologies to be leveraged in the development of new and improved products
- Drive process and oversee deployment of process and team members to programs
- Ensure engineering input to program technical risk and opportunity, and resolve critical technical issues
- Enable common usage of qualified products, designs, tools, and analysis and identify needs for new capabilities
- Support Engineering and Failure Review boards
- Liaison with Systems Engineering, Components & Modules Group, production, programs
- Lead and execute strategic initiatives
- Support Independent Non-Advocate Reviews for Projects, Programs, and Missions to ensure business, customer, and supplier success
- Collaboration with Business Development, identify IRAD needs and priorities, and support proposal inputs
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field is required; advanced degree a plus
- 10+ years of experience in spacecraft system/subsystem product development and operations
- 5+ years of aerospace leadership experience working with multi-functional engineering teams
- Experience in the development and qualification of space hardware, software, and operations
- Working knowledge of Spacecraft Systems and modules, including flight computers, reaction wheels, torque rods, IMUs, power systems, structure, radios/antenna, payload systems, etc.
- Ability to resolve and close technical issues and challenges with competing demands
- Experience in developing and retaining high-performance product development teams
- Demonstrated ability in identifying sales opportunities and capture of business opportunities
- Hands-on full life cycle experience, including concept development, design reviews, manufacturing and AIT, operations, and anomaly investigations

Salary Range
$200,000 - $250,000
Your actual level and base salary will be determined case-by-case and may vary based on the job-related qualification, knowledge, skills, education, and experience. Physical Demands
An employee must meet the physical demands described to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. In performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely required to sit or stand for long durations of time, in addition to bending, reaching, and walking. This would require the ability to lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds. This position is generally sedentary, with substantial computer usage.
Work Environment
The job operates in a professional office environment but in a manufacturing company. This job routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and scanners.
