About the Department
The Community Impact Department encompasses our Youth Programs, Community Programs and Youth Events. NYRR is one of the largest non-profit providers of youth and community fitness programming in New York City (with a growing national/international footprint). 
 
The Youth Program team develops, administers, and supports an evolving portfolio of youth running programs and resources used by schools, community centers, and families throughout New York City and nationwide. NYRR's flagship youth program, Rising New York Road Runners, brings the benefits of physical activity to various sites to help children develop the ability, confidence, and desire to be physically active for life.
 
The Community Program team develops, administers, and supports a comprehensive portfolio of programs including our renowned NYRR Striders walking/fitness program for older adults, our NYRR Open Run platform that provides free running and walking racing, and community-building opportunities in parks across the city, and bespoke programs such as NYRR Run for the Future and Youth Ambassadors that provide deep engagement and lifelong skills such as running techniques and public speaking. 
 
The Youth Events team oversees the development and execution of over 40 Rising NYRR events per year, including events associated with our Five-Borough Series and the TCS New York City Marathon, each serving 100-1000 or more participants, and the support of other youth and community-based efforts.
 
About the Position
NYRR Run for the Future is a free program that introduces young women* in high school to running. The program starts in the summer when participants train to run their first 5K together, creating connections that last beyond the program. They can also be part of a strong alumnae network while they continue their year-round running journeys.The Coach works with the Lead Coach and NYRR Run for the Future program stafftoimplementour curriculum and physical activity training program that will help allparticipants complete a 5Krace at the end of the season.The Coachsupports all efforts to foster a safe and inclusive environment and create strongteam cohesion. Beyond the summer season, the coach may be requested to support our alumni at races and special events.

Job Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
  • Attendance atparticipant orientation, staffmeetings andtrainingsessionsin weeks leading up to the season start, weekly coaches meetings and post-season recaps are required. 
    • Summer 2026: 
      • Program Orientation: Saturday, June 13, 2026
      • In-person sessionsin Central Park:June 29 - Aug 8, 2026, meeting three times a week Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
      • Session #1 – 8:00am – 10:00am or
      • Session #2 – 9:00am – 11:00am
      • Celebration 5K: Saturday, August 8, 2026
  • Support the Lead Coach and Director, Community Programstoimplementa developmentallyappropriateandengagingtrainingplan, with input and review from the NYRR team,that willprovidetheparticipantswith the skills and lifelong habitsneededtoincorporate running into their daily lives.
  • Communicate frequently with theprogram team. Respond to all correspondence promptly and reply to all requests by the specified deadline.
  • Encourageand supportdialogueonthe importance of self-care, goal setting, determination, and self-confidence as they apply to both running and theparticipantslives.
  • Welcome and include program volunteers, donors, workshop presenters, and invited guests of NYRR at practices.
  • Ensure that participants are engaging in asafe andpositive training environment.
  • Foster participants’enjoyment of the sportand athletics in general.
  • Support ongoing RFTF-related events and activities as requestedand complete all staff training.
  • Perform other tasks as needed.
Job Requirements: 
Experience:
  • 1+ year of prior coaching experience, in any sport (coaching experience in running is preferred)
  • Experience in running at any level
  • Experience working with high schoolgirlsis preferred
Education: 
  • First Aid andCPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain certificationthrough NYRR sponsored training)
  • SafeSport and NYS Mandated Reporter training
  • Knowledge ofPhysical Literacy (or willingness toattend online or in-personworkshopsthrough NYRR sponsored training).
  • Willingness to implement and enforce safety protocols as required
Skills and Attributes: 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability tocoach andimplement training plansfornoviceyouthrunners.
  • Punctuality and dependability;Attendance at all team events is required.
  • Ability to simultaneously coach and run a 5Kwithout stopping (at any pace).
  • Ability to facilitate games andteam bondingactivities to create a strong team environment.
  • Ability to motivateand encouragenew runners.
  • Abilityto implement effectiveconflict resolutionas needed.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings, and commit to schedule outlined above
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Salary: $30.00/hour
