About the Department
The Youth & Community Runner Engagement team oversees a variety of programs that offer the running community opportunities to actively support NYRR's mission to help and inspire people through running. One of the programs is NYRR's Team for Kids charity team that has more than 7,000 annual members who raise money for free running programs serving more than 267,000 kids in New York City and across the country. Team for Kids part-time coaches will work with the Team for Kids Head Coach to execute pre-planned workouts in a group setting, creating an engaging and safe workout session for the runners, along with fostering an environment of inclusivity and supporting the mission of NYRR and Team for Kids.
About the Position
The Team for Kids Coach is a part-time seasonal role serving as an important part of our training team for Team for Kids runners, providing coaching and encouragement to help everyone get across the finish line! This role will be contracted from June through November with most hours falling on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings and practices will take place in Central Park, occasionally West Side Highway, and other local routes. Coaches are expected to lead running groups on runs, upwards of 3 hours.
Job Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
- Support team training sessions, working with the Team for Kids Head Coach to deliver the workout
- Begin each training/practice session with appropriate warm-up exercises, stretching, drills, and announcements
- Ensure all participants are supported throughout each training/practice session and finish the course/workout safely
- Proactively answer runner questions, providing support for their overall marathon training journey
- Encourage and support runners to successfully complete the workout
Job Requirements:
Experience:
- Prior coaching and training/running experience strongly preferred
- Experience coaching and working with runners of various levels
- Preferred: Experience in community building and runner engagement
Education & Certifications:
- First Aid and CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain certification through NYRR-sponsored training)
- Preferred: RRCA, USATF, or comparable coaching or training certification (or willingness to obtain certification through NYRR-sponsored training)
Skills and Attributes:
- Commitment to NYRR and Team for Kids mission
- Knowledge of Team for Kids program
- Ability to implement workout for runners of ranging ability levels and adapt workouts onsite as needed to ensure safety of participants
- Ability to provide deliver clear explanations, demonstrations, and instructions about workout and drills
- Strong interpersonal skills with organized and clear communication style required
- Punctual and dependable
- Ability to encourage and motivate runners.
- Ability to implement effective conflict resolution as needed.
- Ability to adapt to feedback based on Team for Kids Head Coach and customer comments
- Comfort speaking in a group setting with authority
- Preferred: Willingness and flexibility to travel to various parks such as Central Park, Prospect Park, and various locations throughout New York City
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to simultaneously coach and comfortably speak, while running non-stop, at an assigned pace/effort
- Run with a 10-pound AED backpack, if required for emergency situations to administer first-aid
