Director of Emergency Medical Services
(Part-Time, 2.5–3 Days/Week)

Position Overview

MedVet is seeking a Director of Emergency Medical Services to lead our Emergency Departments Nationwide. The Director of Emergency Medical Services will play a critical role in expanding support, promoting engagement and retention, and driving meaningful change for our Emergency (ER) Doctors. This position is designed to advance MedVet’s organizational goals by improving emergency efficiency, elevating medical quality, strengthening our ER doctor community, and ensuring an exceptional and consistent experience for our clients, patients, and referral partners.


Key Responsibilities

Traveling Medical Services Leadership

  • Serve as Medical Director for the Traveling Medical Services team
  • Maintain accountability for financial performance, scheduling, hiring, and doctor development
  • Drive ER headcount growth through recruitment and retention initiatives
  • Coordinate assignment of traveling ER doctors (2–6 months in advance) in collaboration with Medical Directors (MDs) and Regional Medical Directors (RMDs)
  • Explore expansion into specialty services, with initial focus on Critical Care, Anesthesia, and Radiology

Emergency National Specialty Team Leadership

  • Lead the Emergency National Specialty Team
  • Focus on DVM wellbeing, retention, community development, and workflow standardization
  • Support MedVet’s Strategic Pillars through alignment of emergency care practices
  • Maintain and support the ER Teams communication channel

ER Functional Goal Accountability

  • Partner with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to drive initiatives aligned with MedVet’s three pillars: Caregiver Experience, MedVet Experience, and Healthy Growth
  • Lead key 2026–2027 priorities, including:
    • Reduction of ER wait times
    • Implementation of a wait-time dashboard across hospitals
    • Pilot and rollout of centralized ER doctor scheduling (Dayforce)
    • Collaboration with Marketing to strengthen the ER value proposition
    • Partnership with Medical Excellence & Education to implement clinical checklists and skills training
    • Burnout monitoring and mitigation planning for ER doctors
    • On-site support for ER departments requiring additional leadership presence
    • Workflow and efficiency improvements across ER hospitals
    • Support MDs and ER Department Heads (ERDHs) in resolving unique hospital challenges

Emergency Department Head (ERDH) Development

  • Collaborate with the CMO to design ERDH leadership and professional development plans
  • Facilitate monthly ERDH meetings using MedVet toolkits and resources
  • Support individual ERDH growth through participation in 1:1s, doctor meetings, and department meetings as needed

De Novo Hospital Integration

  • Provide on-site support during the first week of new hospital openings (ER and multi-specialty hospitals)
  • Promote MedVet ER culture and workflow best practices
  • Deliver onboarding support to ERDHs (on-site or remote)
  • Offer ongoing integration support and collaborate on a standardized ER “playbook” for new hospitals

Clinical Practice (Optional)

  • Maintain the option to work clinical shifts within a home hospital to stay connected to patient care and clinical teams

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 2+ years in clinical Emergency practice
  • Minimum of 2+ years in an ER Department Head or Director-level role

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong clinical background and knowledge of the veterinary industry
  • Proven ability to lead through influence, drive alignment, and resolve complex challenges
  • Demonstrated commitment to MedVet’s core values: Teamwork, Leadership, and Compassion
  • Track record of building strong, collaborative hospital cultures
  • Strong project management skills with knowledge of hospital operations, metrics, and performance benchmarks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with veterinary software (e.g., EzyVet) preferred
  • Ability to travel up to 20% as needed
