The Phlebotomist I functions as a member of the laboratory team to primarily perform phlebotomy duties. Their job can also involve some receptionist, clerical, and specimen handling duties. They work with the Medical Technologists and Clerical Assistants and are involved in pre-analytical, post-analytical and technical lab processes.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes the vision and mission of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and excellent customer service skills.
  • Exercises appropriate independent judgment and initiative.
  • Acquires and updates knowledge pertinent to policies, specimen collection, procedures and result reporting.
  • Performs pre-analytical processing of lab orders and specimens.
  • Performs post-analytical processing of lab results which includes phone requests, faxes and accurate and timely charting and distribution of results.
  • Follows procedures for ordering lab tests into the information system.
  • Performs lab billing and charging procedures for lab services provided.
  • Practices good phlebotomy skills, using appropriate collection devices, handle all specimens following standard precautions.
  • Demonstrates willingness to adjust schedule to meet department needs if needed.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • Phlebotomy experience or completion of a certified phlebotomy training program.
