 Role Mission: The Managing Director of Leader Development (MDLD) manages a region’s Principals in Residence (PIRs) to ensure that every IDEA Greater Houston school will be lead by a high performing principal. The MDLD is the direct manager of PIRs, and in partnership with mentor principals, ensures that PIRs are growing at the rate needed to ensure transformational learning for students in their placement school and the success of that PIR if they are chosen to lead a future campus. 


100% of campuses with a PIR will achieve the schoolwide 90% DI and/or A Rated Region goal(s) 

  • Implement IDEA’s Principals-in-Residence principal preparation program by providing intensive 1:1 coaching  
  • Regularly analyze PIR student achievement data and respond by adjusting coaching with strategic urgency 
  • Coach PIRs to make data-informed decisions to achieve at least 4/5 of their driving goals 
  • Coach PIRs to be effective managers of other leaders by observing leader check-ins and coaching of direct reports 
  • Coach PIRto craft effective vision, goals, tactics and strategies for achieving school wide instructional excellence  
  • Leverage operating mechanisms and business partnerships with mentor principals, all regional and HA leaders to effectively coach and manage PIRs 

100% of campuses with a PIR and Rhodes Fellows will achieve their enrollment/staffing goals 

  • Attend monthly Rhodes sessions and provide feedback on Rhodes deliverables that impact enrollment/staffing plan 
  • Collaborate with other S/DLDs to share best practices across the organization 
  • Ensure PIRs are effective managers of operational leaders by observing various operating mechanisms and effectively leverages buspartnerships with ops staff 
  • Coach PIRs to craft effective vision, goals, tactics and strategies for achieving operational goals 
  • Leverage operating mechanisms to effectively coach and manage PIRs and Rhodes Fellows to meet operational goals 
  • Leverage business partnerships and consult with RDO and VP for effective regional enrollment strategy plan

100% of campuses with a PIR will meet their school wide Persistence and ADA goals 

  • Ensure PIRs are effective managers of other leaders by observing leader checkins and operational operating mechanisms that support Persistence and ADA.  
  • Coach PIRs to craft effective vision, goals, tactics and strategies for achieving operational goals 
  • Leverage operating mechanisms and business partnerships with mentor principals and regional leaders to effectively coach and manage PIRs 
  • Leverage business partnerships and consult with RDO and VP for effective regional persistence strategy plan

85% PIR retention and 85% of PIR-Alumni principals  

  • Consult with VPs to provide thought partnership around principal retention  
  • Periodically (if needed & requested), provide short-term coaching to high priority principals (and sometimes their lead teams) to address a specific need.  
  • Help identify prospective mentor principals 
  • Support mentor principal development in modeling excellence in principalship, if/as needed 
  • Help design and/or facilitate sessions in principal professional development programs, if/as requested by VP(s) 
  • Leverage operating mechanisms and business partnerships with mentor principals and all regional leaders to effectively coach and manage PIRs

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master's Degree Preferred 


  • Previous DLD experience in a launching region
  • Previous experience with a large CMO
  • 3 years experience in teaching

Salary for people entering this role typically falls between $96,200 and $119,300, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications. This role is also eligible for a performance bonus based team performance and goal attainment.
