KEY PURPOSE OF JOB
Since 1944, Heifer International has supported more than 36 million Small Holder Farmer (SHF) families globally lift themselves out of hunger and poverty while caring for the earth in partnership with the communities we serve including Youth & Women. Heifer International is now accelerating its strategic approaches to closing the Sustainable Living Income (SLI) gap for 10 million additional SHF households globally by 2030; In Uganda, our aim is to reach 400,000 smallholder farmers, including women and youth against Heifer Africa's target of 6.745 million. Heifer does this through the Sustainable Locally Led Development approach.
The role of the driver will be to support Heifer International to successfully implement its programs and all related activities by ensuring proper use and maintenance of vehicles, safe and timely transportation of project officers, visitors, goods as well as running office errands. Employee will work closely with the Administration Manager to ensure that all vehicles are in good working condition, permits and insurance are kept up to date.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Transport Services (50%)
  • Plan and execute all trips in accordance with assigned travel schedule, ensuring punctuality and efficient route selection.
  • Provide safe, courteous and reliable driving services to staff, partners and visitors, ensuring trips are conducted efficiently.
  • Maintain a professional demeanour and provide excellent customer care to staff, partners and visitors during transport services.
  • Participate in team meetings and provide input on ways to improve transport and administrative processes.

Goods handling and Logistical Support (20%)

  • Ensure that all materials and equipment stored in the vehicle are properly secured and protected.
  • Perform daily errands such as transporting materials and documents according to instructions, ensuring all receipts, delivery notes, making bank deposits, and invoices are signed and returned as required.
  • Safely load, transport, and unload goods to their designated locations, ensuring they are secure and properly handled throughout the process.
  • Assist in routine office chores were necessary such as photocopying, binding, moving furniture, shredding among others.
  • Support with logistical support during events, supporting the effective delivery, setup and any other logistical support that may be required.
  • Participate in all continuous learning and development initiatives 

Vehicle Handling (20%)

  • Conduct daily routine inspections on the assigned vehicle to ensure the vehicle is in excellent working condition and safe for operation.
  • Ensure the vehicle is taken to an approved garage for scheduled maintenance and servicing.
  • Maintain a detailed logbook to document all trips and submit comprehensive monthly vehicle status reports to the supervisor.
  • Maintain the entrusted vehicle in a clean and well-presented state at all times.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked securely and in compliance with safety standards.
  • Report incidents promptly to the supervisor, and when necessary to the law enforcement of any mechanical issues, accidents, or thefts.

Traffic Laws and Regulations (10%)

  • Strictly observe traffic rules and regulations and maximum speed limits as prescribed by the traffic laws of Uganda.
  • Ensure that both you and all passengers wear seat belts at all times before starting the journey to comply with safety protocols.
  • At all times, obey speed limits, the Highway Code and laws pertaining to road use.
    Comply with road closures and detours and other temporary traffic changes.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions related to traffic regulatory compliance as required by the Heifer.
  • Identify risks and ensure your supervisor is alerted of these in a timely manner.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education.
  • Certificate in defensive driving from a registered driving institute.
  • 8 years of driving experience preferably 5 years of which are within the NGO or International Sector.
  • Valid driver’s permit with classes B, BE, C, and C1
  • Self-starter and self-motivator with the ability to work in a multicultural setting.
  • Must be a team player and have the ability to execute and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow directions and independently complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (23kgs) floor to waist as required.
