Description

Workman Kids, home of blockbuster brands Brain Quest, Big Fat Notebooks, Paint by Sticker and Indestructibles, is looking for an Associate Publisher. This person will work in the New York City office, reporting to the Publisher, leading marketing & publicity, and working as part of a highly collaborative editorial and design team. Most importantly, this person must be passionate about creating books and campaigns that support, encourage, and celebrate children throughout their reading journey.
 
The role is NYC based. HBG's current hybrid working model is two days in the office per week.  
 
General leadership responsibilities:
  • Oversee Workman Kids Marketing & Publicty Team and lead the marketing strategy and vision for Workman Kids books including frontlist and backlist.
  • Lead team of 3 marketers and publicists on the execution of all title marketing campaigns including preorder campaigns, brand partnerships, digital advertising, influencer campaigns, trade advertising and outreach, etc.
  • Work with Publisher on positioning for all titles—developing goals, strategies, and plans for each season to ensure success
  • Point person on everything around Sales Planning Meetings: Launch, Sales Conference prep, Sales Conference and Strategy Meetings 
  • Key liaison with Creative Services on all displays, solicitation, Amazon merchandising, etc. 
  • Contribute to long-term development plans for imprint and help monitor, manage, and optimize business operations to ensure revenue and profit growth 
  • Point person for new systems/process/initiatives: Dropbox, Aprimo, Workfront, etc. 
In-depth breakdown:
  • Sales conference lead-up: manage schedule, oversee Launch, Sales Conference prep (presentation, fact sheets, Edelweiss, etc.), Mailings with Marketing, Presentation and Break-out
  • Sales reporting/communication:
    • Bookscan: review weekly, report to pub/editors
    • PRISM: look at daily sales, review monthly, report to pub/editors
    • Report/answer sales and inventory Qs for authors/agents
  • Edelweiss management: supervise Edelweiss catalog; create markup after Sales Conference
  • Backlist: Review backlist for sales pattern/stock to see if anything’s missed; develop backlist promotions and identify growth opportunities with Publisher, Marketing, and Sales
  • Budget process: work with editorial and managing ed to make sure all deliverables being met; help estimate retail price/sales for forecast and budget
  • Brand management: Track sales/trends and patterns; work with Publisher and Sales to develop future plans and strategy
  • Marketing & Creative Services: approve/suggest Amazon marketing, ebook down-pricing; originate/review marketing materials (sell sheets, videos, newsletters)
  • Manage display process: checking inventory, help assess opportunities and liaise between Publisher/Marrketing/Sales 
  • Point on Amazon merchandising – checking all the pages leading up to publication; telling editors and marketers to flesh out in various ways; identifying when we need to add interior images, coordinating with editorial to select them, etc.  
  • Lead Marketing & Publicity Team 
    • Work across departments to align digital marketing goals with larger title-specific and brand campaigns. Present comprehensive marketing campaign plans in key meetings with editors, publicists, sales teams, agents, and authors. Share campaign updates on a frequent and regular basis. 
    • Work directly with authors to advise on author-initiated digital marketing initiatives and advise on building and optimizing their platforms.
  • Oversee marketing efforts on Brain Quest, Big Fat Notebooks, Paint by Sticker and Indestructibles brands.
  • Contribute to growth strategy and direction for Workman Kids and Brain Quest social media accounts. Provide final approval on all social content. Explore and advise on expansion of social media offerings where applicable including launching new social accounts and platforms.
  • Incorporate and analyze data to refine advertising, promotion and social media strategies while keeping up-to-date on new platforms and marketing methods.

The compensation range for this position is $140,000 - $150,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
