Regional Transportation Lead 

  

  

Reports to: Senior Manager, Transportation  

Location: Fort Mill, SC 

  

Domtar’s Pulp and Paper business units represent over $4 billion in sales annually. We design, manufacture, market and distribute a wide variety of fiber-based products including communication papers, specialty and packaging papers.  The foundation of our business is a network of wood fiber converting assets that produce paper grade, fluff and specialty pulp. Business objectives are focused on growth in sales and earnings by increasing production capacity, improving the product and service offering, and lowering the cost structure.  

  

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Transportation, the Regional Transportation Lead will oversee the utilization and spend of all for-hire transportation carriers within their assigned region. This includes work with Truckload, LTL, Intermodal, Class 1 railroads and short line railroads which service the Domtar facilities in the US and Canada. This involves close coordination with decentralized transportation staff at multiple facilities and cross functional work within the Commercial Operations team, to ensure transportation demand at each respective facility is understood and planned for in advance. 

  

Job Responsibilities: 

        Drive cost savings through transportation services negotiation and continuous improvement initiatives.  

        Conduct periodic business reviews with strategic suppliers, and contract management with over 100 truck carriers and up to 10 rail carriers.  

        Manage carrier relationships to yield new business opportunities, address poor performance or improve customer satisfaction. 

        Oversee customer deliveries are made on-time and without damage. 

        Ensure adequate supply of transportation capacity available to assigned facilities. 

        Develop and manage transportation carrier relationships. 

        Maintain business rules within the transportation management systems used.  

        Resolve escalated operational issues in a timely manner. 

        Manage carrier agreements in a manner which allow efficient execution in various business systems 

        Track and report KPI’s on defined operational metrics 

        Participate in continuous improvement projects 

        Manage a freight budget in excess of $70MM for assigned region. 

        Effectively measure, report, and communicate on these activities on all activities above. 

        Analyze complex transportation problems and develop effective solutions specific to pulp and paper business, industry and facility operations

Professional Experience/Qualifications: 

        B.S. Degree in Business, Management, Logistics, Supply Chain or Engineering field; or equivalent of 5 years’ experience in a Supply Chain, Transportation or Logistics roles. 

        Understanding of logistics operational processes, cost drivers, and best practices across all modes within the domestic market including truck, rail, and intermodal is required.  

        Proficiency with MS Excel required. 

        Experience negotiating transportation agreements required. 

        Experience working with Rail Transportation preferred.
