Domtar Ashdown mill is seeking college sophomores, juniors and seniors with a focus in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering interested in growth development and sophisticated project assignments to join our intern/co-op program in 2025!
 
In our Engineering Intern/Co-op Program, students will be part of a team that shapes the future of innovation in the Pulp and Paper industry. Our engineering intern/co-op students help turn dreams into reality, bring world-class innovation to market and help design our next generation of amazing products that people touch every day! You’ll become fully integrated into our Ashdown Mill, engaged in site tours, work directly with senior leadership and supervision and have assigned mentors to maximize the learning experience.
 
Our platform provides opportunity for hard working individuals to propel themselves into an Associate Engineering role upon graduation. Career advancement at Domtar exists in operations, maintenance, quality assurance, product development, wastewater treatment, environmental and safety operations.
 
Co-op programs run during the Spring and Fall semester/quarter and require 20-40 hours per week. 
 
There are multiple positions available for interns or co-ops for 2025 at the Ashdown Mill: 
  • Spring co-op: January to May 2025
  • Summer intern – May to August 2025
  • Summer to Fall co-op – May to December 2025
  • Fall co-op – August to December 2025
Start and end dates are somewhat flexible. We offer a housing stipend, mentor programs and a safety allowance.
 
Throughout the employment period, the intern/co-op will acquire hands-on experience in a manufacturing setting through a combination of daily mill tasks, process optimization, and problem-solving projects.

Responsibilities may include (but not limited to):
  • Focus on improving the quality control of finished products by proactively identifying potential problems, and quickly and efficiently troubleshooting issues.
  • Analyze production costs, productivity issues, and provide quality control improvement solutions.
  • Technical exposure to various production and support units within the electrical and mechanical teams supporting piping and instrumentation-based projects.
  • Research and develop processes and guidelines for various functional operational units within the facility.
  • Detailed documentation of findings in various systems.
  • Decipher data, apply findings into project recommendations, and revise project plans/drawings/materials.
  • Drafting and documentation in association with maintenance activities and capital installations.
  • Designing and estimating small projects under the supervision of a staff engineer or engineering manager.
  • Advise/support contractors and maintenance personnel in the field.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior in an accredited degree program.  Desired majors include Chemical, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Technical writing, presentation and critical thinking skills to quickly grasp the concepts and components of the pulp and paper industry and process application.
  • CAD experience preferred but not required.
