Description

Domtar is seeking an Environmental Engineer at their Pulp & Paper Mill in Hawesville, Kentucky. The Environmental Engineer reports to the Environmental Superintendent.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, compiling and submitting monitoring reports; the reporting of environmental incidents and excursions; assisting with the development of the Environmental Management System (EMS) and the defining of roles, responsibilities and accountability at all levels and all departments within Hawesville Operations.  Essential duties include:


A.  GENERAL PERFORMANCE

  1. Serves as a resource to Hawesville Operations and Maintenance Department to ensure that systems and processes are established that results in meeting or exceeding environmental regulations and Domtar performance standards and expectations.
  2. Assists Operations/Maintenance personnel in the investigation of all environmental incidents.
  3. Conducts tasks within a structured EMS.
  4. Develops environmental standard operating procedures and reviews operational and maintenance procedures to ensure that environmental considerations are incorporated when and where applicable.
  5. Identifies trends in and facilitates teams to address recurring environmental problems.
  6. Stays up to date on applicable environmental regulations, policies, and programs.
  7. Ensures that document control procedures are followed for the identification, storage, maintenance, retrieval, and disposition of environmental records.
  8. Participates in corporate-sponsored environmental audits and teams upon request.

 

B.  SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL

  1. Participates in the development of environmental and safety goals for the department.
  2. Exercises personal responsibility to prevent harm to self, others and the environment.
  3. Wears personal protective equipment according to mill policies, postings and conditions.
  4. Actively participates in the mill safety system as a member of a task safety team or committee.
  5. Licensed or willingness to obtain licenses to manage and operate an industrial landfill, operate a Class IV wastewater treatment system and Class IIB-D drinking water system.
  6. Completes recurrent training for Hazardous Materials Management and DOT HAZMAT Shipping.
  7. Certified in EPA Method 9 visual opacity measurement. 
  8. Ensures that accurate and complete reports to Environmental Regulatory Agencies are submitted in a timely manner, including but not limited to Title V required reports, Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs), Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Reports, Water Withdrawal Reports, Quarterly Landfill Reports, Groundwater Monitoring Reports, and Hazardous Waste Reports.
  9. Makes scheduled rounds of operations and environmental control systems to verify environmental standards and expectations are being met.
  10. Responds to emergencies and crises to prevent and mitigate emission/release impacts.
  11. Establishes and maintains effective procedures to meet housekeeping standards within the department and at all monitoring and testing locations.
  12. Reviews new chemicals used on-site to minimize hazardous waste generation and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  13. Lead assigned regulatory program areas.  Program areas could include, but are not limited to NPDES, Drinking Water, Solid Waste, Title V, LDAR, Certified Wastewater Lab, etc.
  14. Work across environmental media to learn and serve as back up authority in other environmental areas.

C.  SUPERVISION AND DEVELOPMENT

  1. Participates in the Interview process for the selection of new employees.
  2.  
    •       BS in an environmental engineering field; ChE, CE, or Environmental Sciences preferred.
    •      Five years direct experience in environmental engineering/management preferred but entry level would be considered.
    •      Verifiable experience in environmental permitting preferred.
    •      Verifiable experience in regulatory agency interface preferred.
    •      Knowledge of Water programs, including NPDES, KPDES preferred.
    •      Experience with compliance verification programs preferred.
    •      Licensed Landfill Manager, Class IV WWT Operator, and Class IIB-D Drinking Water Operator preferred.
    •      Knowledge of water, solid waste, and hazardous waste programs preferred.
    •      Knowledge of EMS, ISO 14001 version 2015 preferred.
    •      Versatile in all suites of Microsoft Office
