About the Role

The tax Supervisor is responsible for preparing complex business and individual tax returns, which includes serving as a client point of contact. Tax Supervisors oversee team members on simple and moderate tax engagements, leading by example through guidance, training, and assistance while also actively contributing to service group and firm initiatives. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare complex business and individual tax returns and workpapers, which include clients with multiple entities, multi-state or locality establishments, and/or contain Schedule C or E activities.
  • Prepare complex estimate and extension calculations, including tax liability projections.
  • Conduct first-level review of simple and moderate tax returns and workpapers, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Complete accounting and bookkeeping tasks to finalize client books and financial statements, allowing for tax return preparation to begin.
  • Partner with team members on special projects and advisory services, including delegation as needed.
  • Oversee client relationships for assigned tax engagements, including client communication, answering client questions, and managing client expectations and deadlines. This may include client billing responsibilities.
  • Understand the business and industry of assigned clients.
  • Collaborate with managers and leaders as needed for client management and engagement coordination.
  • Interface with taxing authorities and assist in gathering information for federal, state, and local

tax audits, as needed.

  • Maintain advanced knowledge surrounding relevant rules, regulations, and laws that govern tax at a federal, state, and local level.
  • Utilize resources to answer tax compliance, consulting, and planning questions.
  • Focus on growing skills and expertise in identified specialty interests, including industry and tax return types.

  • Communicate effectively, setting clear expectations for team members and clients.
  • Serve as a role model for newer tax team members, answering questions and providing technical and non-technical support.
  • Supervise and mentor team members, providing guidance and support.
  • Obtain a baseline understanding of the firm’s services and collaboration with other service groups to provide effective client service and observe opportunities for multi-service projects.
  • Work independently and autonomously, for both external and internal work assignments, managing multiple tasks, priorities, and expectations.
  • Meet productivity goals.
  • Meet internal and client deadlines.
  • Work toward completion of the CPA exam, if applicable.
  • Participate in firm-sponsored events and activities.
  • Participate in team and firm non-charge activities of interest, such as:
    • Recruiting activities, including interviewing and evaluating candidates.
    • Evaluating and developing internal processes, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Contributing to the development of training materials and leading training sessions.
    • Joining an internal committee or initiative.
    • Serving as a Career Advisor for tax team members.
    • Assisting in business development efforts, including attending industry events, networking with potential clients, and promoting the firm's services.

 

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in accounting, finance, business, or related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in a tax or tax-related technical role.
