Summary:   The International Center provides educational programming for newly arrived immigrants and refugees with the goal of improving learners’ English proficiency and communication skills. Programming includes daily ESOL classes at multiple proficiency levels, citizenship preparation classes, computer skills classes, individual conversation practice, and specialized off-site community programming for vulnerable communities throughout the city. Under the supervision of the Program Manager the Student Support Worker will provide individual support to students enrolled in ESOL programming and will also support the operational and administrative needs of the program

Salary: $35.00 per hour up to twenty- nine hours per week.

Locations: 80 Maiden Lane, New York, NY, 10038.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

            Operational and administrative responsibilities:

  •   In coordination with Program Manager and instructional staff, supporting operations and      activities across the full program cycle.
  •   Assisting with outreach, presentations, and/or workshops, including preparation of related    materials and resources
  •   Assisting with program intake and pre- and post-assessment using BEST Plus and other        tools
  •   Supporting delivery of quarterly online student orientation sessions in English and                Spanish.
  •   Maintaining detailed record-keeping and secure documentation of student- and program-      related data; tracking outreach efforts/results/student information using shared tools. 
  •   Registering students’ information in databases used internally and by the funder to track      data and metrics in accordance with contract and internal reporting requirements;                  supporting other evaluation and reporting activities as needed.
  •   Translating materials into Spanish or other languages as needed to ensure language access    for participants.                                                                                                                           Student support responsibilities: 
  •   Assisting learners with accessing online classes by providing individual support and            leading Zoom workshops.
  •   Conducting weekly, individual student outreach to ensure consistent attendance and              retention across programs, including monitoring class WhatsApp groups.
  •   Conducting follow-up with learners after programs begin to confirm enrollment and            answer questions. Conducting follow-up at the end of each course to invite students to          register for  next cycle, providing support for students with their plans/next steps, and          assisting with class reflections and certificates.
  •   Communicating regularly with program staff, students, and partners; responding promptly    to requests.
  •   Assessing the needs of students enrolled in the International Center’s adult ESOL and          Citizenship programs and making appropriate referrals, as needed.
  •   Identifying, supporting, and escalating program and immigration-related questions to            appropriate staff and departments.
  •   Advocating for students and their families regarding school enrollment, health care              assistance, and access to other services.
  •   Other duties as assigned.

  

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a part-time hybrid position, with remote and in-person work required. Classes are held online two mornings and two evenings per week. Outreach and support will be conducted in coordination with class hours. Evening hours are required and occasional weekend hours may be required to meet student and program needs.

  • Remain stationary at a work station and in meetings, and use a computer at least 75% of the time.
  • Bend, stretch and use short ladder in order to file.

 

Qualifications:

Education and/or experience required:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in related field, or graduation from high school and equivalent professional training related to the position.

 

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish Comfort using technology and inputting data, including working knowledge of WhatsApp, MS Office (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel), Microsoft Office 365, Google Drive Suite, Zoom, and Canva;
  • Ability to prioritize multiple competing tasks;
  • Highly motivated and self-starter;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate politely and professionally with staff, volunteers, learners, external partners, as well as the public; and
  • Good interpersonal skills.
