Competitive Intern – Data Leadership

Business Development Jobs Centreville, Virginia

Description

Are you the person who looks at a spreadsheet and sees a story waiting to be told? Do you have a passion for digging into the "why" behind the numbers and a knack for spotting what the competition is doing before they even know it? If you love deconstructing data to find a competitive edge, CARFAX has the perfect internship for you!

Join our Analytics Team this summer as our Competitive Data Intern. You’ll dive deep into the vehicle history ecosystem, identifying market gaps and helping us articulate why CARFAX remains the industry leader. You'll collaborate with senior analysts and product leaders while enjoying our four-day work week during Summer 2026!

At CARFAX, we believe in the power of teamwork and value in-person interactions so that we can collaborate and thrive together. This position will require 3 days in our Centreville office, subject to change with future business needs.

What You'll Do:
  • Market Intelligence: Conduct deep-dive reviews of vehicle history competitor websites to document UX, feature sets, and data transparency findings.

  • Strategic Product Analysis: Analyze vehicle listing competitors to recommend product enhancements driven by CARFAX’s unique, proprietary data assets.

  • Comparative Research: Perform a detailed competitive data analysis between CARFAX and government-run vehicle history entities to identify coverage gaps and advantages.

  • Data Storytelling: Create "Data Leadership & Superiority" analyses and high-impact presentation slides to help us communicate our market-leading position to stakeholders.

  • Reporting: Synthesize complex technical findings into clear, actionable executive summaries.

We’re Looking For Someone Who:
  • Is Naturally Inquisitive: You don’t just accept data at face value; you ask the second and third-level questions to get to the "so what?"

  • Is Detail-Oriented: You have a sharp eye for nuances in data sets and can spot small discrepancies that others might miss.

  • Possesses Strong Analytical Skills: You are comfortable working with large datasets and can identify patterns, trends, and outliers effectively.

  • Is a Strong Communicator: You can translate "data-speak" into compelling narratives for both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Is Tech-Savvy: You have excellent Excel and PowerPoint skills, including experience with advanced formulas, pivot tables, and professional slide design.

  • Is Academic-Focused: Currently studying Data Analytics, Statistics, Economics, Business Intelligence, or a related quantitative field.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) or basic SQL, R, Shiny knowledge).
  • A baseline understanding of the automotive industry or used car market dynamics.
