Job Specification
We are seeking a highly accomplished and visionary Principal Business Intelligence Developer to join our team in a key hands-on leadership role. As a Principal BI Developer, you will be responsible for the BI and Reporting solutions of a part of our global business, lead and mentor a team of BI Developers, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver innovative data-driven solutions. You will leverage your deep expertise in BI and Reporting to guide the development and implementation of cutting-edge data marts, dashboards and reporting solutions. Responsibilities:
- Hands-on technical ownership of a set of BI and Reporting solutions, including reports, data marts and dashboards, for a part of Apex’s global business. This includes responsibility for the build, run and maintain of these solutions.
- Ensure that BI and Reporting solutions meet performance and security requirements and that outputs are delivered within the defined SLA’s.
- Management of and mentorship of a team of BI Developers, fostering their growth, providing technical guidance, and ensuring the team's continued professional development.
- Model Apex values to your team and ensure that they complete all Apex’s mandatory training requirement and comply with all Apex policies and processes.
- Ensure that the team follows best practices for software development, including version control, coding standards, and testing methodologies.
- Stay at the forefront of the latest advancements in BI & Reporting and guide the team in adopting the most suitable methodologies and techniques in a way that integrates with the rest of the Apex Group and its Unified Data Platform.
- Communicate status, risks, and issues to both the Global Head of Business Intelligence and Reporting and key business stakeholders.
- Build a “trusted advisor” relationship with your executive and senior management where you understand their business needs and provide technical solutions. You will also present complex findings, insights, and technical concepts in a clear and compelling manner, influencing data-driven decision-making at the highest levels of the organization.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including business stakeholders, data engineers, and IT teams, to identify requirements and their potential solutions.
- Membership in the BI and Reporting Design Authority that defines standards, provides technical governance and oversight, and acts as brains trust for our solutions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Information Systems or a related numerically orientated business field. A master's degree is a plus.
- Extensive experience (At least 10 years of experience) in Business Intelligence and Reporting, with a proven track record of delivering impactful solutions to complex business problems.
- Expertise in scripting languages, such as Python, R, or PowerShell, for both data manipulation and orchestration.
- Strong understanding of multiple BI and Reporting tools
- Extensive experience with SQL, preferably in multiple dialects (e.g. MS SQL Server, Oracle and Snowflake), and experience working with relational databases for data extraction and manipulation.
- Best in Class understanding of the principles behind data visualisation.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically, analyse complex data, and propose innovative solutions.
- Outstanding communication and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven experience in leading and managing complex BI and Reporting solutions, projects and teams, ensuring successful outcomes, and fostering a culture of excellence.
- Strong strategic thinking and ability to drive the vision and roadmap for BI & Reporting initiatives, setting technical standards and guiding the adoption of emerging technologies
- Strong understanding of cloud security and data protection best practices.
- Strong understand of cloud-based data processing, data lakes, and serverless architectures.
- Active involvement in the BI community through publications, conferences, or open-source contributions.
- Expertise in SQL Performance optimisation and understanding of the principles behind SQL Optimizers.
- Familiarity with data governance, data privacy, and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
- Familiarity with using REST API’s to extract data from one or more cloud platforms (e.g. SalesForce, Workday)
- Experience with near-real time data warehousing, modelling and reporting.
- Familiarity with compiled applications, such as Java or C#.
