ABOUT THE ROLE
In this new role, you’ll leverage your expertise in domestic and/or international corporate tax compliance, to build and scale the tax function for a fast-growing renewable energy company.  As our first full-time tax hire, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping 3Degrees' financial future by ensuring compliance, optimizing our tax structure, and identifying valuable savings opportunities. You'll partner with various teams, educating them on the critical role tax plays in maximizing cash flow and propelling our mission forward. This is a full time role reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. Title and scope for this role will align with experience, and structure within the company.  This position is open to candidates ideally based within a commutable distance of our offices including Portland, ME,  New York, NY , San Francisco, CA or Portland, OR, where you'll enjoy a flexible hybrid working environment.  Exceptional candidates based outside of these locations may also be considered for a remote location.  In addition, you agree to travel, periodically to 3Degrees’ offices for training or team collaboration and to conferences and customers as required. Frequency and cadence is team dependent, but on average is 1-6 times annually.  3Degrees does not provide sponsorship and /or relocation assistance for non-nationals in any of our roles. Therefore pre-existing right-to-work status or full work visa for the locations listed above is a prerequisite in order to be considered for this position. 
WHAT YOU’LL DO

You'll establish a robust tax compliance and reporting process with the support of our external tax advisors.  This includes coordinating tax filings across various jurisdictions, managing tax accruals, and ensuring accurate record-keeping.  Your keen eye for detail will be essential as you review tax returns and lead initiatives to optimize our global tax structure.  You'll also be a strategic partner, providing tax guidance to internal departments, helping navigate complex situations, and identifying opportunities to streamline processes and reduce tax burdens.

Tax Compliance:

  • Coordinate filing local, state, federal, and international corporate income tax returns with our external tax provider and respond to data requests in a timely manner
  • Review quarterly estimate calculations and assess liquidity impacts
  • Review any tax return filings and related work papers in detail
  • Lead ongoing nexus and permanent establishment studies and build data collection processes to capture apportionment factor inputs
  • Advise Sales/Contracts teams to mitigate valued added tax (VAT) leakage and foreign taxes paid
  • Prepare IRS tax residency certificate and non-income tax forms as necessary
  • Respond to any notices received and coordinate all federal, state, and local income tax audits with tax advisors as needed

Tax Reporting and Optimization:

  • Coordinate annual tax provision preparation with external tax provider and respond to data requests in a timely manner
  • Ensure that tax-sensitive entries are booked to the correct general ledger accounts on an ongoing basis
  • Calculate and post tax accruals and true-up entries to the general ledger
  • Recommend and implement business and process improvements for higher-quality tax controls and financial reporting
  • Provide strategic tax guidance to streamline and optimize the company’s global tax structure while expanding into new international markets
  • Identify tax-saving opportunities and analyze tax implications of business decisions
  • Conduct domestic or international tax technical research and analysis as needed

ABOUT YOU

You are an experienced tax professional in domestic and/or international corporate tax compliance.  A natural leader, you thrive in a fast-paced environment and possess the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.  Your passion for data integrity and deep understanding of ASC 740 accounting principles will be instrumental in ensuring our tax reporting is accurate and efficient.  Highly communicative, you can translate complex tax concepts into clear, actionable insights for non-technical audiences. Ideal candidates will also have the following qualifications:

  • 3 - 7 years of experience in corporate tax compliance; 1+ years public accounting firm 
  • Understanding of ASC 740, Accounting for Income Taxes concepts 
  • CPA, EA, or equivalent preferred
  • Excellent communication skills with in explaining complex tax concepts to a non-technical audience 
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel (index match, pivot tables, if functions, conditional formatting, filtering)
  • Optional but helpful: experience with indirect taxes or pass-through compliance
  • Experience in technical research and consulting with commercial and legal teams
  • Curiosity about the renewable energy industry and aligned values for our mission
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, law, or related field 

HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS
 
Within 30 days,

  • Develop a working knowledge of the key tools and software resources available to you, including MS Excel, Google Sheets, and G Suite
  • Gain a clear existing of existing filings and roster of in-progress and upcoming tax projects
  • Gain a broad understanding of the company’s business model and tax implications

 Within 90 days,

  • You will have gained a comprehensive knowledge of 3Degrees business units, products and service offerings and their tax implications
  • You will familiarize yourself with existing tax processes and filings at 3Degrees and key points of contact internally and externally
  • You will understand the key drivers of book-to-tax differences for 3Degrees and existing cash tax optimization strategies 
  • You will begin assessing the company’s existing tax processes and draft process and policy recommendations to lower risk, improve cash flow, or lower the effective tax rate

Within 6 months,

  • You will manage and coordinate all tax-related projects and processes and be familiar with the company’s holistic tax footprint
  • You will become a trusted strategic partner to multiple stakeholders and work seamlessly across business units to ensure timely and proficient output of tax returns and tax-related deliverables
  • You will provide forward-looking advice on how to optimize the company’s global tax footprint and work cross-functionally to implement tax strategies
  • You will be efficiently managing the initiation and completion of all tax functions, meeting statutory and internal deadlines with minimal supervision
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Compensation: The starting base pay for this position is between $100,000.00 to $155,000.00 in the US. The total compensation package for the successful candidate in this role may exceed the base pay as it includes other incentive pay. The base pay is dependent upon many factors such as location, transferable or job-related skills, work experience, relevant training, business needs, and market demands. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future

  • Supplemental Pay: this position may be eligible for discretionary bonus programs including the company’s profit sharing program and an annual team Bonus Pool
