The Associate General Counsel is a unique position that blends high-level strategic responsibilities with hands-on legal work, making it an ideal opportunity for a seasoned legal professional to influence and shape our legal landscape. In this role, you will have the opportunity to evolve our legal processes to deliver on our aggressive growth strategy in a manner that minimizes risk and maximizes opportunities. Your expertise will help steer our compliance, corporate governance, and risk management efforts while leading our legal team to new heights.
This is a full-time position reporting directly to the General Counsel. This position is open to candidates ideally based within a commutable distance of our San Francisco, CA office.  Where you’ll enjoy a flexible hybrid work environment. WHAT YOU’LL DO  

Join our dynamic team and play a pivotal role in shaping our team.  As a key leader for the company your work will be focused on the following areas:

Shape strategy and effectively navigate the complexities of the environmental commodities market:
  • Support for commercial transactions involving a diverse range of environmental commodities, including Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), carbon credits and allowances, global Emissions Allowances (EACs), low carbon fuel standard credits, and renewable natural gas
  • Draft, negotiate, and review complex agreements to ensure alignment with our business objectives and mitigate potential risks
  • Stay at the forefront of legal and regulatory developments impacting the environmental commodities sector, both domestically and internationally
  • Advise on emerging environmental regulations and their implications for our company's operations
Become a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders and senior management:
  • Lead a team of legal professionals and ensure optimal workflow and efficiency
  • Offer strategic legal counsel to senior management on corporate governance, risk management initiatives, and key business decisions
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure all legal considerations are addressed in company-wide projects and initiatives
Foster a culture of compliance and responsible business practices:
  • Oversee legal aspects of corporate governance to maintain the highest standards of transparency and accountability
  • Develop and implement comprehensive compliance programs to mitigate legal risks and ensure adherence to all applicable environmental and financial regulations
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion and ensure legal practices reflect these values
Provide global oversight and proactive risk mitigation strategies:
  • Leverage your legal expertise to ensure our global operations comply with international regulations and local legal requirements
  • Proactively identify and assess potential legal risks across the business, implementing strategies to mitigate those risks
  • Conduct legal due diligence for international transactions and partnerships

ABOUT YOU

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced legal professional with a passion for environmental sustainability, a knack for navigating complex legal landscapes and strong interpersonal and advocacy skills. Your strategic mindset and hands-on approach enable you to excel in diverse legal functions while leading and mentoring a legal team.
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of legal experience within a large corporation or firm, with at least 8-10 years of managing an in-house team
  • Expertise in corporate governance, compliance, and risk management
  • Proven track record in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex contracts
  • Experience managing litigation and working with external counsel
  • Strong leadership skills with experience supervising and developing legal teams
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of environmental commodities markets and regulations is a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with a state bar

HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS
Within 30 days,
  • Business and Legal Acumen: Demonstrate a solid understanding of 3Degrees' business model, strategic priorities, and the environmental commodities market landscape. This includes reviewing training materials, actively engaging with stakeholders and seeking outside resources, if necessary
  • Team Integration: Become familiar with the legal team structure, processes, tools, and internal systems used to manage the team. Meet with your team members and clients to gain knowledge of how the team currently operates internally and with the business and counterparties
  • Relationship Building: Build strong working relationships with key stakeholders across the organization, including senior management, business unit leaders, and external counsel. Schedule introductory meetings, actively listen to their needs and challenges, and begin building trust
Within 90 days,
  • Legal Expertise: Demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of the legal and regulatory landscape impacting 3Degrees' operations, both domestically and internationally. Conduct legal research, analyze emerging trends, and identify potential areas of risk and opportunity
  • Team Leadership: Successfully manage and lead your legal team, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment. Delegate tasks effectively, provide clear communication and direction, and offer constructive feedback
  • Strategic Thinking: Begin contributing to the development of strategic legal plans aligned with the company's goals. Identify legal considerations for upcoming initiatives, propose solutions, and participate in cross-functional discussions
Within 6 months,
  • Compliance Champion: Lead the implementation of a comprehensive compliance program to mitigate potential legal risks. This includes developing and documenting policies, conducting training sessions, and ensuring adherence to all applicable environmental and financial regulations
  • Strategic Advisor: Develop and present strategic legal recommendations to senior management on key business decisions. Analyze complex legal issues, identify potential risks and benefits, and provide clear and concise guidance
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner effectively with cross-functional teams to address legal considerations in company-wide initiatives. Proactively participate in meetings, offer legal expertise, and collaborate on solutions that meet both legal and business objectives
Within 1 year,
  • Deal Execution: Successfully navigate complex  transactions involving environmental commodities and other areas of focus for 3Degrees. Draft, negotiate, and review agreements that meet business objectives and mitigate potential risks
  • Culture of Excellence: Implement a culture of legal excellence, service and ethical business practices within the organization. Set clear expectations, provide ongoing mentorship to team members, and foster a learning environment
  • Team Development: Develop and mentor your legal team, fostering their professional growth and expertise. Identify individual strengths and weaknesses, create opportunities for learning and skill development, and support career advancement
  • Global Risk Management: Proactively identify and mitigate legal risks across the company's global operations. Stay up-to-date on international regulations and legal requirements, conduct due diligence for international transactions, and implement risk mitigation strategies

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Compensation: The starting base pay for this position is $186,261-$252,000 in the US. The base pay is dependent upon many factors such as location, transferable or job-related skills, work experience, relevant training, business needs, and market demands. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. The total compensation package for the successful candidate in this role may exceed the base pay as it includes other incentive pay

  • Supplemental Pay: this position may be eligible for discretionary bonus programs based on personal, department and company goals
