Suffolk University seeks a highly collaborative and dynamic human resources leader to serve as the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). The CHRO will play an important role in moving the institution's strategic initiatives forward and collaborating across the institution as an innovative and trusted partner. Success in this role requires an entrepreneurial spirit with demonstrated breadth of knowledge across all human resources functions, progressively responsible management and leadership roles, and experience driving organizational change in a complex and dynamic organization.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, the CHRO will lead a team of eleven staff members. This leader will have an opportunity to be innovative in helping shape Suffolk’s culture and policies as well as implementing best practices that support the University’s momentum in both academic and administrative endeavors. The University comprises three units, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Sawyer Business School, and the Law School, and employs approximately 1,270 faculty and staff.

The Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) is a strategic and process-oriented change-agent and collaborator, and an excellent participative leader. In partnership with senior leadership, the CHRO will translate Suffolk's strategic vision into forward-thinking HR operational plans and will drive the following initiatives, opportunities, and goals:

  • Lead with vision. The CHRO will provide strategic and organizational guidance to senior leaders on human resources issues. The CHRO will evaluate current HR policies and implement appropriate best practices while looking at future trends and opportunities to build a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive culture;
  • Engage as a collaborative partner. The CHRO will build a network of collaborative relationships and partnerships across the colleges and administrative units, serving as a trusted advisor and resource to staff, faculty, and administrative and academic leadership;
  • Guide talent management and workforce development and planning. The CHRO will be a future-focused leader and will build capacity among managers and supervisors, both long standing and new, in employment matters such as onboarding, succession planning, performance evaluation, and compensation strategy. The CHRO will partner with and advise University leaders on issues related to human resources such as organizational development and compensation studies;
  • Lead and develop a strong HR team. With direction from the CHRO, Human Resources will offer the highest level of integrity and service to a relationship-driven workforce while continuing to improve policy, programs, and practices that meet the evolving human capital needs of the institution;
  • Develop and adopt best practices in using data and analysis. The CHRO will leverage data and innovative tools and systems to build a culture that drives operational efficiency and optimizes the use of timely reporting and data analysis to present actionable intelligence for the department and the University;
  • Enhance competitive compensation and compliance. The CHRO will provide leadership on the development of compensation and benefits programs, balancing prudence while continuing to offer competitive compensation packages that attract and retain top talent;
  • Build culture, brand, and community. The CHRO will work with the campus to build a positive and inclusive university culture that highlights Suffolk’s employee value proposition. Additionally, the CHRO will develop strategies to promote Suffolk as one of the best places to work in Boston; and
  • Align with Suffolk's mission. The CHRO will lead organizational initiatives that align with the University's mission and goals of working collaboratively.

Additional background requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a related field; advanced degree and an HR certification is strongly preferred.
