After a very successful launch in 2016, The Balance has rapidly grown to become a Top 10 Personal Finance & Investing site with over 21 million visitors a month (  It is the leading property in the category for women and millennials in particular, simplifying and demystifying personal finance by delivering clear, practical advice helping peoplewith all of the questions they might have with respect to their lifelong relationship with money. The Balance helps people earn more, spend smarter, invest well, and build a better future.

As the General Manager of The Balance, you will act as the “CEO” of this business, responsible for its P&L and for establishing overall strategy and subsequent performance.  You will craft initiatives designed to grow revenue, sessions, engagement, and to improve the overall user experience. The Balance is a newer brand so you will play an essential role in helping build the brand, acting as the primary public face of The Balance.  You will help us to continue developing the brand’s position in the market and its voice. This is a unique opportunity for someone eager to really put their personal stamp on a newer brand that is already a huge player in Personal Finance.

About Your Contributions:

  • Provide overall executive leadership ensuring the continued development, growth, and execution of the business strategy, value proposition, team culture and the brand, including:
  • P&L responsibility for the brand.
  • Manage a team of editorial and product/dev resources creating high quality content and delightful user experiences for our audience. Work across multiple functions (including sales, SEO, data sciences) to achieve broader goals for the brand. 
  • Work in close partnership with Sales to help grow revenue across multiple revenue streams (advertising - including programmatic, eCommerce, lead gen).
  • Analyze competitor strengths and weaknesses and assist in potential M&A due diligence.
  • Act as the public face of the brand, working to better establish its position and voice in the market, attending trade shows and events, and supporting PR and marketing.
  • Drive innovation and new audience development and growth strategies (including potential focus on things like social and email).
  • Communicate effectively and frequently with senior management as well as across functions with key stakeholders with respect to overall strategy and tactical planning as well as resulting performance.

About You:

  • A proven track record of successfully managing a consumer-facing, digital media team that has delivered quantifiable success in growing revenue and profit throughout multiple lines of business. P&L experience, successfully exceeding the top line and managing expenses to plan as a digital leader is a must.  The General Manager of The Balance will be a known and well-respected executive in digital publishing with drive and desire to take the brand to the next level. 

  • Thorough understanding of digital publishing and SEO, and category expertise in personal finance.
  • Proven success in building and leading high quality teams of A players. 
  • High degree of comfort and experience with data driven decision systems.
  • Strong financial, operational, and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to develop, structure, and execute business strategies, going beyond just tactics to “the vision thing;” predicting industry trends and allowing the business to stay ahead of the curve as digital media continues to evolve.
  • Understanding of content management systems and related tools. Fluency with analytics systems such as Omniture and Google Analytics.
  • Impressive written and verbal communications skills with experience and comfort interacting extensively with senior management.
  • Bachelor's degree from a top tier school. Advanced degree a big plus and preferable.
