Writer/Editor
This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days/month in the office. You can be based in any one of our offices in London, The Hague, Mexico City, Brazil, Colombia, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, India(Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore), Indonesia or China. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position.

WRI Communications network aims to expand WRI’s reach, reputation and impact. Working as a globally coordinated network across the Institute's programs and country offices, we distill complex research into clear and compelling messages. We leverage a variety of channels – including media relations, editorial content, digital marketing and more – to inform and engage a growing audience of decision-makers, stakeholders and donors.
This position is part of the Core Communications team, which provides communications leadership and support to the entire institute.

• Develop clear and compelling digital and print content for broad audiences.
• Edit program- and country-driven content to ensure it adheres to WRI’s standards for quality, accuracy and messaging.
• Draft articles, web pages and other strategic content to showcase WRI’s research, work and expertise.
You’ll have a team of editors and seasoned communications professionals working side-by-side with you; to help ensure we’re meeting our goals and delivering results.
What will you do:
Editing (50%):
- Review content pitches from program and country communications teams and provide strategic guidance
- Substantively edit content authored by researchers and communications staff —including Insights articles, Technical Perspectives, Project Updates, project pages, content hubs and other content for WRI.org
- Ensure all content is clear, compelling and fit for audience
- Work with WRI’s graphic design and video teams to produce multimedia that supports WRI’s written content
- Conduct photo research and draft captions to accompany editorial content
- Project manage editorial pieces, including incorporating feedback from multiple reviewers and seeing projects through from concept to publication
Writing (30%):
- Draft articles, web copy, brochures, newsletters and other editorial content to support WRI’s strategic priorities
- Develop short, visually driven content such as charticles, working closely with the Editorial Director and program/country communications’ leads
- Ghostwrite articles and thought leadership content for researchers and senior leadership
Content Strategy (20%):
- Track analytics for editorial and communications products and use data-driven insights to inform content development
- Utilize SEO and other digital best practices to ensure wide reach of key materials
- Stay abreast of the news cycle and institutional priorities to brainstorm strategic content
What will you need:
- Education: You have a completed bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, environmental studies, history, political science, sociology, anthropology and other fields. Relevant work experience in lieu of degree is accepted
- Experience: You have a minimum of 5 years of full-time relevant experience in implementing a communication projects / process.
- Writing & editing expertise: You have experience both writing and substantively editing articles and other digital content, with a strong command of the English language. You excel at translating technical information into compelling prose. You provide feedback clearly and diplomatically to get the best out of every author. You have experience producing a variety of different content types — from human-centered features to data-driven charticles. Newsroom experience is desirable, as is familiarity with AP Style
- Digital experience: You are an experienced writer for web, with proven skills in SEO and other digital best practices. You are well-versed in content management software and have experience using project management software to lead teams through content development. You have experience using digital metrics to inform content decisions and adjusting workplans accordingly
- Creativity: You consistently bring fresh thinking and strive for innovation. You can see the newsworthy story buried within a research report. You can think visually and brainstorm multimedia content that complements the written word
- Languages: Fluent in English
- Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position is based. WRI is unable to authorize visa work authorization
Potential Salary: UK: 44 – 53 K GBP; NL: 57K – 68K EUR. If located in another country office, salary will be determined by local market conditions. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
