Senior Communication Specialist for Energy and Sustainable Business (Jakarta based)

Communications & Engagement Jakarta, Indonesia

Portfolio Overview

World Resources Institute (WRI) is an independent national research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. WRI Indonesia is affiliated with World Resources Institute (WRI), a global environmental research organization that works with various stakeholders to support policies and practices that are sustainable and profitable. WRI works with leaders in more than 50 countries for more than 30 years with offices in Brazil, China, Europe, Africa, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States.

Launched in early 2014, WRI Indonesia builds on WRI’s 20-year history in the country. The official establishment of the WRI Indonesia office has strengthened our impacts on the ground in recent years. Over time, WRI Indonesia aims to expand its portfolio to include climate, energy, and city and the ocean. Therefore, it is important for the organization to identify and put in place the research building blocks for achieving the vision of WRI Indonesia, supporting science- and data-driven decision-making at national and sub-national levels. We will do this by driving the transition in three critical human-centered systems: i) food-land-water system ii) energy system and iii) cities system.

In the energy sector, WRI Indonesia has built its internal expertise through the establishment of The Energy and Sustainable Business (ESB) Portfolio, which supports net-zero business initiatives by developing research, tools, and climate solutions, while advocating for science-based policies. Our key contributions include the establishment of Corporate Assistance Program under the Kadin Net Zero Hub, a five-month intensive capacity-building initiative aimed at enabling companies to transition toward net zero; our involvement as the main partner to the Green Centre of Industry at the Ministry of Industry in developing the Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap that will serve as a guideline for industries to transition; and our collaboration with PLN to co-develop climate solutions, such as Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) and Green Energy as a Service (GEAS), and ensure these are accessible to the market.

WRI Indonesia employs a matrix working system that promotes collaboration across portfolios. This cross-cutting approach leverages diverse expertise to create innovative solutions that wouldn’t emerge in isolation. For instance, our ESB Portfolio also works with the Transport Portfolio to advocate for net-zero within the transportation government agencies and help them to account for their emissions and climate impact. The ESB portfolio also connects with the climate team to work on cross-cutting issues, such as just transition and critical minerals. A combined portfolio allows WRI Indonesia to advocate for more comprehensive policies that consider the interconnectedness of climate, energy, urban development, and ocean health. This integrated approach has also attracted more funding opportunities and partnerships, as many stakeholders seek solutions that address multiple issues simultaneously.
