Senior Communications Manager, Systems Change Lab

Job Summary:
As the Senior Communications Manager for the Systems Change Lab, you will play a pivotal role on WRI's Climate Communications team. Your responsibilities will include shaping the communication strategy for Systems Change Lab data platform, our annual State of Climate Action reports and our Climate Watch data platform. In this high-profile role, you will develop and carry out communications strategies, write compelling, journalist-quality content, oversee messaging, develop social media assets and other supporting materials and pitch journalists about the necessity and opportunities to accelerate transformational changes across all sectors to tackle climate change and protect nature.

In this role, your first primary focus will be to manage communications outreach leading up to, during and following the successful launch of the Systems Change Lab platform in June 2022, including our State of Climate Action reports which will inform that platform. Additionally, you will provide limited communications oversight for the existing Climate Watch data platform, which enables users to analyze and visualize global climate data from historical emissions to sustainable development goals.

We will look to you to identify and take advantage of high-profile external opportunities to profile how the Systems Change Lab, the State of Climate Action reports and Climate Watch can inform policymakers, businesses, civil society and other stakeholders to greatly accelerate action to the pace of action needed to limit global warming to 1.5 C and halt biodiversity loss. 

This position is remote due to Covid-19, but you will be based at WRI’s office in Washington, DC once restrictions have lifted with the possibility to be continued as remote in one of the states in which WRI is registered.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of communication strategies, create high-impact messaging and carry out communication tactics for major reports, digital platforms and other high profile opportunities
  • Produce inspiring, compelling, journalist-quality written content to bring findings from the State of Climate Action Report and the Systems Change Lab data platform to life. This includes content for the website, op-eds, articles, etc.
  • Oversee the development of social media content and assets including videos and animations
  • Develop talking points and other messaging materials and create powerful presentations
  • Build and foster collaborative relationships with our partners’ communication professionals and technical experts
  • Lead media engagement with top editors and reporters
  • Track and evaluate metrics of success, and adapt strategies to grow and improve outreach results
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in a communications role with three+ years in a leading strategic capacity, preferably at an environmental or sustainable development nonprofit or another mission-based organization
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or similar field. Master’s degree preferred
  • Deep subject matter expertise in climate change, biodiversity and sustainability issues which you can draw upon to produce well-informed content, infographics, events and more
  • Proven record of exceptional writing, editing and messaging
  • Experience in managing communications for digital data platforms, websites or other online resources
  • Self-starter able to execute ambitious, comprehensive communication strategies, manage consultants and coordinate effectively with peers, partners and technical experts
  • Ability to track metrics to understand impact and communicate them
  • Ability to report to manage competing deadlines
  • Ability to pursue long-term objectives by translating them into short-term goals
  • Highly resourceful and acts as a problem-solver
  • US work authorization is required. WRI cannot offer visa sponsorship for this position.

Potential Salary: $96,000 - $130,000. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.

Program Overview:
Reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and shifting to nature-positive development, while also building a fairer economy, will require transformational change across all major economic systems—finance, energy, transport, the built environment, agriculture, land use, manufacturing, and consumption. Broader transitions must also occur, such as how we measure progress, deliver basic services, and equitably distribute the costs and benefits of change. As a virtual and dynamic situation room, the Systems Change Lab (SCL) will monitor systems change globally, taking stock of where shifts are accelerating (or stalling), and analyzing what’s working, what isn’t, and why. It will partner with visionary leaders and diverse coalitions, arming them with the evidence they need to mobilize more effective action and cross positive tipping points.

The Lab is being housed jointly within World Resources Institute, the Bezos Earth Fund, and the High-Level Climate Champions team, is part of the Global Commons Alliance and is working with a wide consortium of partners, including the University of Tokyo’s Center for Global Commons, and the World Economic Forum.
